Do we have goveners on our trucks?

I had to make a run to work a little while ago. On the way home I put my foot into it. I got the truck up to about 100mph. Right about then it felt like I let off the gas. The front of the truck bogged down and it felt like the front brakes came on just for a second. For a second there I thought I blew the motor. But, it was running fine. Wasnt over heating, the rpms were fine, and oil pressure was normal. But, do the 98's have some sort of govener on them?

They have "speed limiters" in them.  They are designed to kick out around 98 mph because the tires aren't rated for speeds above that.  You can buy a HyperTech programmer and change that if you feel the need to get into the "triple digits" very often.

No, I think I will leave it that way. I was just having some fun with it. It just got me wondering wether there was a govener on the truck or not.

That's how the limiter feels on my truck.  I hit 98 and the truck just lets off and drops to 95.  When I was in MI I had to open her up since they've got more open roads than we do here.

My 2002 Avalanche with the 5.3L engine has a fuel cut off at 5600 rpm.  I am not sure what speed that would be but I suspect it is around 100 mph.  The BFG AT/S tires have a speed rating of S which is 112 mph.  I would bet that the tire rating has more to do with the fuel cut off limit than some sort of engine protection.  Max horsepower is at 5300 rpm.

I think I was up around 4500rpm. I didnt really look at the rpm gauge while I was in the 80's and 90's. I was watching for cops more then anything else. Its was 2am, and around here the cops drive black cars with white doors.

I try not to speed at night.  Reason being is all cars look pretty much the same in your rearview and around here there are a lot of white impala cop cars where I have trouble telling that if it's a cop during the day.  They're putting stickers on the side only and they don't have the light bar on top.

Yeah, I try not to either. But, I know not many cops frequint the highway at night. They neighbor hood around it isnt the best place the be lost in at night. So, the cops stay in the neighbor hood most of the time.

Mine did the same last weekend going south for New Years...hit upper 90's once and the limiter kicked in......scared me to death..........!

Digs, I the reason it scared me so was that I really and truly didnt realize I was going THAT fast....I knew I was going fast but NOT 98-100!  I am always amazed at how good the truck feels at high speed.  Still dangerous though.

I recorded 126 MPH in a '99 Silverado (5.3 extended cab) and have saw close to 130 in my supercharged 6.0 Suburban. That's fast for a big brick but it handled pretty good :) Don't do it to often though.

I know the enthusiasts on boards like this tend to be among the better drivers, so this isn't directed at (us).  But...There's nothing I hate worse than seeing a 3 ton truck casually doing triple digits running down the highway.  Anyone here think their truck brakes are up to the task?  I'd hate to have to panic stop in front of one.

Not that this person even tried to stop:

John, I agree. During the day when 99% of the people are out driving is not a time to be testing the speed limiter on your truck. Thats why I tested mine at 2am when only 1% of the people are on the road. There are no where near the amount of cars on the roads then, maybe 3 or 4. At that time in the morning, you can just let the truck slow itself down, without using the brakes.
