Do a search for Torque Management to find your answer. Your truck has been programmed that way to prevent drivetrain abuse but you can get around it with a modified PCM.

my 8.1 wont even chirp from a stop but i did a pretty sweet slide with it 2 days ago, but part of the reason is that yours in a 2004, the factory pcm doesnt allow the throttle body to open up 100% until 3000 rpm which is why it feels like a fat pig, its a stupid idea none the less, i would say a shift kit and a pcm upgrade would defenitely make those tires last about 5000 miles :flag:

Yea, I have an 8.1 , when i put it to the floor on take off it goes to 4.5 thousand rpms(redline), if i let off and it shifts into a higher gear and try to go up a hill, it wont go past three thousand. I would like it to shift down but it wont on a hill like that.

If you mat the go pedal and let it torque up to 2500 rpm's with the brake on. And you release the brake a lil the tires will break loose then just let er eat.

I have a 2004 GMC 2500HD regular cab 4x4 with the 8.1 / Allison with the locking rear (3.73). The truck is completely stock except for 285/70/17 BFG AT's.

If I floor it from a stop it will smoke the tires like crazy, but if it hits 3000 RPM or so it will shift to 2nd gear, stop spinning, and then downshift to 1st and continue to spin the tires till it has to shift to 2nd at redline and by then its going fast enough to where it just won't spin them anymore.

It will also spin all 4 tires in 4-Low on dry pavement for a short distance.

Probably not the best thing to do to the truck, but then again its a truck and its under warranty.

try putting it in tow/haul mode, 1st gear.

this is basically manual shift mode.

Mine will stay in 1st , period.

It will smoke the tires, both of them.

redline is 5300 RPM.

manually shift to 2nd.

redline to 5300.

manually shift to 3rd.

check speed!

My 8.1L from a dead stop will rev to about 4500rpm (where the redline starts with the red dots) and the tires will spin and smoke and the rear end starts bouncing. I gotta take my foot off the pedal to stay in control! Of course, it uses 5 gallons of gas every time I do that.
