I am sure this has been discussed before, but i just joined the site. What is the biggest tire you can fit on a stock HD wheel, I believe it is 16x6.5. Thanks for the help

Welcome!

285/16/75. Most can fit those tires under the truck with little or no adjustments. In some cases you may need to adjust the TBars or pull the front portion of the wheel well forward with zip ties.

I have 285/75/16 Toyo Open Country A/T's mounted on the stock steel wheels. I cranked my t-bars 1", no rubbing at all. The installer said Toyo recomends a wider than stock wheel. The narrower stock wheel tends to pull the tire beads inward causing a slight bulge in the center of the tire. This will cause the center of the tire to wear faster than the outer edge of the tread. By staying with the stock wheel and backspacing you avoid the tires sticking out to much. I have over 4000 miles on the Toyos with no visable wear. I highly recomend these tires, excellent all around tire, aggressive tread for an A/T, very stable while towing (4500 lb. boat), and super quite on the road. Good-Luck.

The stock wheels are really a bit narrow for 285s and you should really have an 8" wide rim. People do get away with it but it is probably not the best idea. It does increase the risk of rolling a tire off the rim. The largest tire recommended for the stock 6.5" rim is the 245 that comes stock on the truck.

I agree... 285's are too large for the narrow rims, however alot of people are running them with no problems. Some tire manufacturers say that 265's are acceptable on the stock narrow rims.

I have an 01 2500HD with a 6.0. I don't know if the rims are the same, but I think that they would be. If I'm not mistaken, the rims on mine (stock) are 7.5" wide. When I went to purchase some tires, I had the guy look my truck up and this is the size information he gave me. I looked at a BFG catalog and it listed tires for a 7.5" rim up to 295. I have a set of 285s on mine, and have had for a year now. No problems or complaints to report. I did turn the torsion bars up, but it was to level up the front, not necessarily for the tires (but it probably didn't hurt). The reason I didn't go with the 295s was the price difference. I couldn't see paying that much more money for 10mm (l----l)of width.............plus I got a pretty good deal on a set of 285s :chill: .

Hope this helps!!
