What's the real difference?

After reading for DAYS on www.ls1truck.com, www.ls1tech.com, www.gm-trucks.com and a few others I'm a bit confused.

What is the REAL difference between Nelson's and Westers tune?

LS1 forums seem to lean WAY more towards Nelson's for #1, PCM4LESS for #2, and Westers for #3.

I am planning to get this soon, and from what I have pieced together I have in mind the following:

Probally 89/93 octane tune.....to allow me to tow when needed.

Remove 100% of engine TM

Remove 75% of Transmission TM

Remove Abuse mode

Remove Speed Limiter, and keep shift points close to stock.

I know it's not a drag truck, and It's not mean to be fast, BUT the TM blows and has to go. When I want the power, I'd like it to be there. I'm very very light on the pedal 99.5% of the time. Abuse will not be an issue at all since I won't beat on a 35k truck.

What is the real difference between all these tunes? People claim that Nelson's gives much more power gains in the 1/4 mile (dosent matter in my case), and is overall a better tune. PCM4LESS is about the same, but more conservative and cheaper, etc.

Shine some light down my tunnel to enlighten me a bit.

BTW---I'll have a Magnaflow cat back and a drop in K&N filter with the stock box, and different intake tube.

Thanks again.

Honestly there is probably not a lot of difference in any of the tunes mentioned. If they all agree to do the changes you want and if you are not planning to do any upgrades then go with the cheapest. The mods that you mention do not really need to be tuned for and are within the range of the stock PCM as far as I know. If you plan to do a lot of engine modifications then Alan Nelson may be the best in the long run. You can not really go wrong with any of these tunes and I think they all will give you 30 days to evaluate your decision. It is a personal preference and I think you will be happy with whoever you pick. I have a Superchips 2280 and it made a big difference in the performance of my truck. Talk to each of them and go with the one you feel most comfortable with.

I don't know about the other PCM's but I do know that Westers gives a lifetime exchange, so if you ever sell your truck, just call him and he'll set you up for your new truck (you just have to pay the difference + shipping).

So if they're all really the same, people post lots of different results with them. Some say that they ran .5, etc seconds quicker with nelsons over westers, or vice versa.

The general population of this board are leaned towards Westers.

General population of the LS1/LS1truck boards are towards Nelsons, then Westers

A few MISC boards are towards PCM4LESS.

I'd love to see dyno results and auto tap results with all 3 but that has not been done yet.

One person SAID with Westers, 100% TM removed, timing was still pulled way way back.

I'm trying to get my cards in a row before I drop $500 on a computer. Like I mentioned before, I baby all my vehicles, but when I want power, I feel that it should be there and avail. I want the ability to tow at least 6-8000lb boat in the future, with power to spare, stock shifting, but more power..lol

Thanks again for any insight.

Mighty HD- I have almost exactly the same setup you do (ex. cab, 6.0L, 4.10's, 285 BFG's), except my truck is a 00 model, and I went with a Nelsons tune. I can't tell you the real difference in each tune, just my experience with mine and the reasoning I used in selecting it. The tune has made a huge difference in the way the truck drives and performs. It no longer feels like a dog off the line (TM rearing its ugly head) and it drives way better even when towing. I occasionally tow 8Klbs plus on an 18' foot trailer and have had no issues. I haven't had any problems with the tune at all-I have been very pleased with the change. I baby my truck as well, (M1, insane with PM and all) and don't really need the extra power, but I love knowing it is there.

I went through the same quandry about 4 months ago- Nelson vs. Westers. I went with Nelson, due to his tunes being a little more aggressive with the TM according to all I read and the fact his business was U.S. based, so shipping was not such a PITA. Allen Nelson was very professional and answered all of my questions very well and took the time to address my concerns. I emailed Lyndon a few times, and he seemed to be very good and VERY knowledgeable too....but in the end, I did go w/Nelson due to the above mentioned reasons. I don't think you can go wrong with either of them, you will probably be happy with either tune you chose. I lurk on a lot of the truck forums and LS1 Tech, its funny how each forum seems to have their favorite tuner. Good luck with your decision, I think you will be pleased the change in performance whichever one you decide to go with. Research it all you can, and then make your own decision. :D:thumbs:

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
