Transmission Filter Change

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I drained my tranny fluid this weekend and replaced the filter. However, I could not get the old filter seal out? My book says to use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers to carefully pull it out without scratching the Aluminum housing. THERE IS NO WAY! It is too tight.

Is there a special tool for this? I just pushed the new filter into the old seal for now - it seemed to be in good shape.

Also, I just planned on adding / draining fluid several times to purge all the old fluid with new. I don't trust these flusing systems. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

B

When I did my trans service, I called a buddy of mine who is a writer at a local Chevy dealer and his foreman told him that they leave the seal in if it's in good shape. Unfortunately I had mutilated mine trying to remove it, so it had to come out. I ended up using a slide hammer with a hook on the end and it came out first shot.

Exactly, use a seal remover. Checker Auto carries then for cheap.

Looks like a little mini pick axe.

With the tool it take 2 seconds, so why second guess it.
