Windshield Washer Pump

Last weekend while doing an oil change, I filled up my W/S washer fluid reservoir and noticed that I had a constant drip afterwards (the reservoir had emptied twice rather quickly before that). So, I thought I had a crack in the reservoir. After taking what seemed to be the whole front end apart to get it out, I found that my front w/s washer pump housing was cracked and I had a hole in the hose going to the wipers. Anyway, after fixing the hose and putting it all back together (since I don't have a replacement pump and can't drive with the battery disconnected) it now leaks worse than before. I ordered a new pump for $38 but it hasn't arrived yet to make sure this is the problem.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had had a similar problem with their washer pumps? What do you think could have caused this in the first place? This is on my 2001 Tahoe with 87,000 miles.
