3.42 to 4.10

I'm not happy trailering with this truck.  On hilly backroads I'm either redlining in 2nd or dieing in 3rd.  So I thought changing the rear might help.  I spoke to a Chevy service rep who told me I would have to change the gears in the front as well due to 4wd, and that this would push the cost towards ?k.

Does this sound right?

Is there a better way to go?

The trailer weights >5,000 lb, and the truck is as described in sig.

Thanks.

The problem with the old TBI's is that the redline is 4000rpm.  4.10 gears is the best bang for the buck, especially for towing, but ? is crazy.  The gears itself can be bought for ?.  You'd need two sets-one front diff and one rear diff.  Installation is a pain in the @!#.  I highly recommend hiring someone to do it.  I would say ? is close.

www.summitracing.com has Richmond gears for ?.   Most big service centers can do it.  2 grand is nuts in my opinion.

? is way too much for a gear swap!!  Try to get hold of kaspar139, via messenger.  He's done a ton of shopping and price checking on gear swapping lately.  I'm sure he'd share what prices he's found.  I think pastmaster is more in the ballpark-

This is just a thought, but if you aren't towing all the time and your running stock size tires then maybe 3.73 gears would be a good comprimise.  Otherwise I'd reccommend 4.10's...  You'll be turning alot more rpm's though, especially at highway speeds!!!

Go with the 4.10's. I had 3.73's and they were adequate, but the 4.10's are better. If you're running 265's it might not be too bad on the gas mileage. I'm running about 2200 rpm's at 70 mph with the 265 TA's. 2k for a gear swap does sound pretty high.
