Brake Bleeding

Does anyone know of a master cylinder cap that will work for a brake pressure bleeder? I have a 2001 Z71 5.3L and already have the pressure bleeder, but I need a cap that will seal tightly. Has anyone done this?

 

I would buy a spare cap and rig it to work, but those original caps just don't seal very well.

I have an old kit that had a cep to fit everything I bleed. I have not looked for any of the later model stuff since what I have works on my 98. Sorry. You might be able to find one by checking Pep Boys or AutoZone or a place like that. Pep Boys carries a lot of the speciality stuff.

My motive products kit doesn't have a cap that fits the reservior perfectly. I have to use one of the universal caps that have the chains and j-hooks with wing nuts to fasten the thing on. (there are two - one round with one fluid outlet, and second rectangular one with 2 outlets for the older style all-metal reserviors)

 

I think the whole mess is a bit kludgy, but it did work, but I had to use a longer section of chain that I had around as the kit supplied one did not wrap around the master cylinder and back to the other j-hook.

This is probably what I will do. Did you have any trouble with leaks between the MC plastic bottle and the actual MC itself after using that setup? The two are just pressed together with rubber grommets and squeezing it all together worries me a bit.

I recently bought the Motive Pressure Bleeder (American Kit) it has round and rectangle universal adapters. The rectangle works fine on my 99 OBS truck. I have used it 2 times since getting it, once being last night. Works fine, just BE SURE and take your time setting the adaptor up on the MC. Pump the tank up while empty to around 10-12 PSI and listen for leaks. You will hear leaks and have to crank on each J-hook until you get the leak sealed. Once you think the leak is sealed, let it sit for a few minutes holding 10-12 PSI and watch the gage to see if it drops. If pressure holds you are good to go. Just DON'T touch the adaptor on the MC after this. Slowly remove the lid on the tank, pour in some brake fluid, pump it up to 13-15PSI (NO higher than 15PSI IMO) and have your wife or whatever stand at the tank and give you fluid level and pressure updates and watch for leaks around the MC as you go to each bleeder. Crack the bleeder and wait until fluid flows with no air. Be sure you have a hose running from the bleeder to a clear Coke bottle or something so you can see the air comming out.

 

Takes a few minutes of set-up and a little patients but once it is sealed it works very nice.

Thanks, I like yours too. Total pain in the a$$ to keep clean, but worth it I guess. Even though I don't wash it nearly as much as I used to. Only been waxed 2 times, once by professional and once by me - I clay-barred the whole truck and waxed it.......over a course of 4 days. Doesn't have any swirl marks at all though. Pic was taken in Galveston, TX - nice down there.

Had very little trouble at all. The cap just needs to seal for air pressure, so it doesn't have to be too tight. As I said though, the only thing I needed to do was to use a somewhat longer chain than I had in my kit (cheap lightweight stuff you can buy by the foot down at the local home despot). The only place I had a tiny leak was the tank hose to the MC hose connection. I had to tighten that up real hard. I should have used some teflon thread seal on it, but didnt. Next time I use it, I'll make sure not to repeat that mistake.

 

As far as the procedure #9 mentioned is right on the money, althought, I don't recall using so much pressure. ANyway, I just re-used my first empty quart brake fluid bottle to start collecting the crappy stuff and moved onto the second when needed. The only downside is that they're not transparent and you have to have some light shining through them to see the level.
