What are your thoughts regarding the following intervals regarding maintenance items? Are these too soon, or not soon enough?

 

PCV valve- every 30,000 miles.

 

fuel filter- every 30,000 miles.

 

front/rear diff fluid change - every 50,000 miles.

 

transfer case, transmission fluid/filter change - every 30,000 miles.

 

plug wires, cap, and rotor - every 100,000 miles.

Sounds good on the fuel filter, PCV, never changed mine and I am at 130k, diff sounds good, tranny filter i think is every 70k, check your owners manual, tune-up, I do mine every 50k, there is no way stock stuff could last 100k. Just my opnion, not a statement of fact or the views of the managment.....

What do you guys think about the EGR valve, maintenance and what not, do you ever clean it or do you just let it go???

 

I read on someones website about cutting the tube off the egr valve for more air flow on the 5.3s.... Anyone do this mod, if so any problems or gains out of it???

I've never cleaned mine, although it really couldn't hurt I suppose. Our trucks now have an electronic EGR solenoid, so I might be a little weary about cleaning it, afraid of damaging the electronics.

As far as the EGR mod goes, I've heard of it, I've even seen a how-to with pictures somewhere. Personally, I don't see how it could be worth it. Engineers designed that pipe to stick down that far for a reason, and I could see how cutting it could hamper it's performance. A properly functioning EGR helps to lower cylinder temperatures, which is good for performance and helps prevent pre-detonation, which the knock sensors will pick up and the PCM will pull timing, which hurts performance. Just my opinion and a few facts.

Another "free mod" which is very popular is the throttle body bypass. With this, you remove the coolant hoses that go to the throttle body to help cool the air charge. That might be fine in Texas and California, but here in New Jersey, where it gets well below freezing in the winter, I prefer that my IAC and all of that circuitry is functioning properly. Once again, my opinion.

Actually that coolant hose heats the incoming air to allow the truck to run leaner sooner. Bypassing this will give you colder intake air, but may result in a richer running condition and poorer fuel economy.
