i just recieved my westers 93 hot tune and i have a question. Ive heard that it can take a couple tanks of gas for the pcm to take full effect. is there any truth to this? if so why is this? isnt the pcm already changed, i dont understand exactly what the deal is here. if anyone has any info let me know im very curious.

I just received my Wester's too. It say it will take about 200 miles to learn.

I don't ungerstand computers but I think it has to learn the way

you drive along with other stuff, why I don't know. :ughdance::ughdance:

I'm afraid I can't help you very much. I received mine Friday

and have driven it very little. The weather here really sucks

now and I'm waiting for dry roads to really give it a try!

It could take about 150-200 miles for the PCM to learn and get used to your driving style. It looks at load signals, 02 readings, MAP readings, etc. and adjusts accordingly. After about 200 miles you should know what you have.

hey Bud, just wondering how you like your hot tune so far.  Ive got the same truck only 04 with some other bolt ons, and just wanted to compare opinions- thanx

I can't tell you too much. I received it last Friday and the weather

has been bad every day. I can really tell the difference just normal

driving though. Soon as it dries up a little I can tell you more. I've

only driven about 25 miles!!

I just received my Westers 89/93 dual tune about a week and a half ago. I have put a tank and a half through it and I will share my experiences with you.

When I 1st installed it, the only thing I noticed was the transmission functions. (Shift points/firmness/downshifts/throttle responsiveness) I was thrilled with the results on that end, but after about 250 miles on a weekend trip the following day, I didn't notice any improvement in performance. I was running 92 octane fuel from the moment I installed it. It was about exactly a week and one+ tank full of fuel that I noticed a very slight improvement in performance. It was noticeable definitely, but nothing worth writing home about. I called Lyndon and he reviewed my file. He asked about local elevation here. (1250) He said he has been receiving many complaints from people in the U.S. about pinging. He said as soon as he gets my core he'd send me a "hotter" update. He said that it is easier to make it hotter than to explain why it's pinging so bad.

Long and short. Put some miles on it and drive it somewhat hard. I would drive around town and make it downshift around every corner. Accelerate hard at lights and freeway entrances.

When I purchased mine, the going phrase of advice was, "Drive it like you stole it---for the first 100 miles."

I have really enjoyed mine. I mean, this isn't one of those upgrades that will possibly pay for itself. I just don't see that. But, it certainly fulfills the "golly-gee" part of the truck.

I had a little bit of pinging after a few hundred miles. Went with a HyperTech 180* T-stat, never pinged again. I recently had Lyndon upgrade my PCM for this and tranny work, never pinged again after "retune". Easiest way to check to see if your PCM is improving performance, take out the "tuned" PCM and put back in the stock one. Mine felt like I was towing a tractor trailer. No low/mid power at all and would not downshift when I'd get on it. Needless to say I was glad to get my Wester's back. Chris

When I first put my Wester's 93 in the trans

shifted really firm. Now a few days later the trans seems a

little slow. Is this part of the learning? :chevy:

I agree with Chris97,

I have never had a custom PCM, but my old truck had the HyperTech and I honestly felt no difference at all. So I left the HyperTech code in the PCM for a few months. Truck needed to see the dealer so I removed the HyperTech and Ohh my gawd.......She felt like I swapped the 5.3 for the 4.8...If I had a custom tune I am sure it would have felt like I swapped in a 4.3. Just my opinion.

Bud, the tranny has an "adaptive learn" feature. If you drive easy, the tranny tones down the shift pressure, if you drive hard, the tranny turns up the pressure. It's a learning thing, I find if I boot it hard at least a couple of times a day it will stay in the firm shift mode. This is in GM programming and has nothing to do with the tuning. That is why shift kits can sometimes cause problems. The shift kit adds pressure, the PCM sees it as something wrong and turns the pressure down. What you end up with is good firm shifts from the shift kit (the bands), but too little line pressure holding the clutches between the shifts because the "Adaptive learn" turned the pressure down.

Check out my post in high performance regarding the dyno results of the Westers Hot Tune. I had two PCMs and the stock one and dynoed all three. You need to drive it really hard for the first hundred miles or so. Also, Lyndon does use less advance initially due to complaints about pinging. I live at 5280 and he has really juiced mine. However, when I got down to sea level in Canada, it didn't ping, just ran really strong. Also, make sure you got the throttle fix. GM controls the throttle opening on 2004-2005 models and Lyndon can override it.

I agree with what Butch said about the adaptave learning, and the shift kit. Most manufacturers PCM's have adaptive learining...one of our Toyota customer thought that his vehicle was losing power, and we couldn't find anything wrong with it. I beat the piss out of the thing trying to duplicate his concern and had to deliver the car back to him as it was. He called us back from his cell phone and said "I don't know what you did but the power's back!" A couple of months later the same thing happened...long story short (too late), we found out that on both occassions his wife had used his car for a week and every time he got it back from her...well I guess you know where this is going. The PCM adapted to her softer driving style.

I agree about the shift kit issues too, I originally was going to do the Transgo deal, and after a little research decided that for a daily driver increasing trans performance electronically was the way to go. I still have a Corvette servo that I didn't install and some aluminum accumulator pistons that I'm gonna hang on to if my plastic ones ever give me problems.

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
