Magnaflow CatBack Installed

I've had a magnaflow cat-back system installed on my 2500HD for a couple of weeks now. It replaced the stock system which was a dual 3" inlet, daul 3" outlet HD Muffler, into an external Y, then into an approx. 3.75" diameter, side exit, tail section. (FYI, the HD muffler is for sale if anyone is interested, only has 1,500 miles on it) The stock system was replaced with a Magnaflow daul 3" inlet, internal Y, and a single 4" outlet muffler http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/parts/14594.jpg into a 4" side exiting tail section.

First, let me say, the Magnaflow system removed considerable weight from the truck, which for me, is a good thing The quality of the Magnaflow system is excellent. The muffler and exhaust tip are polished stainless steel (beautiful), with the remainder of the tubing being mandrel bent raw stainless steel, or not polished.

The system was installed by Magnaflow themselves. I can not say enough good things about their facility and employees. The shop was impressive, to say the least, with lots of eye candy to keep you busy and entertained

Brandin (Qwik03) was the guy I mostly dealt with, although I had the pleasure of metting Mario as well .........not. Anyway, after my recent "nightmare stereo install" I am/was extremely nervous and cautious about anyone, other than myself, operating my truck. I'm happy to report, my truck was handled with great care and respect Thanks Brandin, I sure appreciate that!

Now for the meat and potatoes. My truck is totally stock, no HP mods what-so-ever, and it made 10-13rwhp gain throughout the entire powerband. Also, each successive dyno pull, netted higher gains, not exactly sure why though.

The 10-13rwhp figure was the most conservative gain after 7 post install dyno pulls.

There is also a noticable SOTP difference, which is an added bonus

Noise: wait, that's not it, more like a mechanical symphony

The 22" magnaflow case is a very good compromise between reasonable decibels and great performance!

however, there is some resonance at 1900rpm, although, no where else in the operating rpm range (0-6000rpm). At first I thought this to be a liability, but it's actually quite the opposite. I find myself looking for that magic rpm (1900) just to hear that sound. Since freeway cruising finds me well above that in every situation, except stop-n-go traffic, it is basically a non issue, and is not intrusive at all. It's kinda like a treat, and I know where to find it

For anyone considering a Cat-Back System, IMO, give Magnaflow a serious look. I'm certainly enjoying mine, and it makes real HP to boot!

:troll: LOVE the Magnaflow! I had mine for about two months now and don't know why I waited so long. Magnaflow has a great sound, and I get compliments on mine all the time, even at the dealership a few weeks ago to have some warranty work on it. About 6 mechanics commented to be about how NICE is sounds.

Enjoy the new pipes!

Very nice install moregrip. That is what I want to do for mine as well but I have been tossing the duals out the rear around as well. Did you consider them at all? Have you heard how they perform and how they sound? Thought you might have asked when you were getting yours installed or while making up your mind.

Anyhow, very nice post and thanks for that. :troll:

Looks good. Did they add 2 small lengths of pipe to ends of the inlet pipes where they are clamped to the muffler? Cant really tell from the photos. This is the system I have been considering going with. The resonance has allways been a concern, however by the way you describe it, I could probably live with it. Not to mention the added HP gains. Nice job. Thanks for the info :troll:

The reason your rear wheel numbers were changing is becasue the engine computer was still learning the change you made. It may take a week or so of driving for the computer to settle in.

How's the interior sound level with that Magnaflow? I had one on my other truck with a 5.3 Its loudest volume was at cruising range (1800 - 2300 rpm), it drove me nuts and had it removed after 2 weeks. I'm real hesitant to go back to Magnaflow again. But you and other people seem to like them. Maybe I'm just too sensitve. My concern is the interior sound level, do you need to turn down the radio to carry on a convesation at highway cruising speeds? Since Corsa doesn't make a system for my truck, I'll have to look elsewhere. Any input is apperciated.

I absolutely considered a dual out the rear setup. What I was told, in most cases, with our trucks, they make slightly less HP, however there have been a few odd balls that made more HP with them.

The duals would be a custom job if going magnaflow. IMO, it would only be for looks as the dual 3" inlet to a 4" outlet seems to be very free flowing.

FWIW, I'm trusting this system to compliment my Radix SC install very soon, so I personally believe this to be a very well designed system.

yes, they welded the two small lengths you speak of.

I beleive my 4.10's help to keep me away from the 1900rpm resonance area quite well, so much so, that I have to make an effort to get there to hear it, if you catch my drift.

I agree. What I didn't mention was my last dyno pull showed a 30rwhp gain. This seems a little unrealistic of course, but non-the-less, it did make the rwhp/rwtq #'s.

The 22" case is really very docile. It gets slightly louder as it warms up.

I would not consider this to be a loud system at all, in fact, it is rather quiet.

Interior volume is very low to mild, I do not have to talk any louder to hold a conversation.

I know I have a measly 1500, but I have a magnaflow 18" Single 3", Dual 2.5" straight out the back with 3" Stainless magnaflow tips. I couldn't be happier with the sound or performance. Mid range and Top end were very noticeable increases, and with the Wester's PCM I even gained some at the lower RPM range (mainly because of the removal of Torque Management) Gas mileage went up a little too, went I wasn't romping on it to hear the goodness that came with heavy throttle.

In my sig there are some sound clips, if anyone wants to hear what that setup sounds like on a 4.8L.

Magnaflow = Big :ughdance:

Thanks for info, much appreciated. :D

By the way I believe that Magnaflow now makes Dual Rear Exit Catbacks for the '03-'04 1500HD # 15828 and the 2500HD #15829 as well as the regular SSE 1500HD #15782 and the 2500HD #15789. Nice to have a choice when there was none for so long.

Keep up with the great posts and good luck with the Radix. I am really looking forward to hearing how it goes for you. :chevy:

    • New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
    • So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.
    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
