93 bogging out

I was on my way home this weekend and my truck started to bog when it kicked down out of OD. This continued and the service engine soon light came on intermittently. At first I thought it was a tranny problem, but when I put the truck in neutral and revved the engine it would reach 3,200 and cut out( like a limiter was kicking in). I question if it was bad gas, or if its some other problem. I'd hate to bring it in for a diagnostic and get no trouble code( as the service engine soon light is NOT staying on). The truck will not maintain speed uphill unless it stays in OD under 2200 rpm. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

You can check the code yourself on a 93. Do a google search for OBD codes and you can read it using only a jumper wire.
