Fuel Pump's On It's Way Out...

Hey guys....I've got a 99' Silverado 5.3L and the fuel pump is starting to get a bit iffy on me. Sometimes it'll have no problem starting and others(mostly when it's cold or low on fuel) it just won't kick in. It turns over and comes close to starting but just won't quite make it. Anyone think this is something other than the fuel pump?

Also...anyone ever replaced a fuel pump themselves to save on the labor? I've heard of taking off your bed to get to it, anyone done it and/or know how complicated it is? Thanks!

There are other things it could be besides the fuel pump, but from the way you describe it, it seems like the fp is the most likely culprit. Personally, I'd run tests for spark and fuel before I condemned any part.

If it does turn out to be the pump, replacement's fairly easy IMO. I've always dropped the tank and used a board and floor jack if on the ground, or a trans jack when I have access to a lift. Alot of people like to unbolt the bed and slide it back, which seems easy enough also, I've just never done it that way.

I replaced mine by removing the bed, much eaiser than dropping the tank. Specially since they always go bad when the tank is full. Remove the bolts, unhook the wiring by the spare, et a buddy to help slide the bed about 1' to the rear and the fuel pump is right behing the drivers seat. Takes about 2 hours total and no mess.

Thanks guys...I think I'll probably end up sliding the bed back and doing it that way. I have a question though...would I have to do anything to disconnect the fuel spout that attaches to the side of the bed? Or is that flexible enough to move with the bed when I slide it back that foot?

Also...if you've got any other tips about doing it to make it easier, let me know. I could use all the help I can get. :dupe: -Thanks

You're going to have to disconnect it in some way, it doesn't stretch that much...not sure if you need to remove it at the tank or up top. Mike's done it that way a ton of times, I'm sure he'll have more info for ya.

Yes, if I remember right, there are 3 torx screws that hold it to the bed, remove them and the plastic piece comes off, then fold it out of the way a little and you are good. I believe there is also a ground wire there somewhere. It is pretty easy to get to.
