2002 8.1 Suburban on order

After driving and towing with my supercharged 2001 6.0 Suburban for the last year I decided to order an 8.1. The 6.0 is a good motor and works even better with the Magnecharger but I think the big block work out better. The truck is used as a daily driver at times and also tows a 24" enclosed car hauler (probably weights about 9000 lbs with the car). Gas mileage ranges from a low of 6.3 (driving 80+MPH) to 8.3 taking it easy and maintaining 70-75. I read that alot of guys are seeing 9-10 while towing and it would be nice to see more than 250 miles between fill-ups :( Performance mods to the '01 include an Airaid induction, supercharger, JBA headers, B&B TriFlo exhaust and computer tuning. Induction, exhaust and computer mods are also planned for the 02 and I might see if Kenne Bell has a supercharger available for this motor yet.

Nice Suburban Tom!!!  Welcome to the site.

(feast your eyes on that "Burb" Paco!!!)

I've always thought a supercharger would be a great "mod", but it's probably more than I could handle to install myself.  Maybe in a year or so if I keep my HD I can save enough $$ and have a speed shop install one for me.  I've been pretty happy with my 6.0L so far and for the occaisional towing I do it does pretty well.

By the way, I know you're going to love the 8.1L.  I doubt you'd ever need to add a blower to it, but if you did...  HANG ON!!!   LOL!!!

Feel free to jump in on the board and offer some of you expertise...

With the highest tow rating of all the SUV's on the market you can't go wrong, and a powertrain that will light the hides up.Even though your trailer at times will not be even noticed back their compared to the 6.0L,1500 Chevy Suburban. One question four wheel or two wheel. To improve on mileage after break in you might concider programmer, exhaust, intake, and Granateli mass sensor if it's out by them...Truely a big block to replace the famed 454.I believe that tow rated hitch is 12,500lbs...or will it climb to 15,000lbs,yes the monster has been unlease with this 504cubic inch...electronic fly by wire throttle:p,yikes prime time torque monster....

Mervz/Shaners: Thanks for the welcome! :(

The Magnecharger was actually an easy install as far as superchargers go. This one only took about 4 1/2 hours and I saw an 80hp gain at the rear wheels.

Hanks: I hooked the trailer up to a friend's 8.1 crew cab and was very happy with how it towed (didn't even notice it back there). This will be a 4WD truck that will look very simular to what I have now (2500 series). I heard that GM is offering 2 tone this year (they didn't in '01) so I'm waiting to see if I can have it painted two tone or will have to sent it to the body shop again to be sprayed.

I've always thought the 8.1 in a Suburban would make a great car hauler for somebody who goes to alot of races.  You got plenty of room for people, and plenty of power.  Hope you stick around and keep us updated on your upgrades!   :(

I noticed a red LS 8.1L Suburban on my dealers lot last weekend...  I had to hold myself back from taking it for a ride...

The PIAA airdam and lights really changed the look of the front truck. The 40 series driving lights throw off ALOT of light and I upgraded all of the bulbs to PIAAs. The new truck will have high intensity lighting. One other mod planned is swapping the stock hood for an HD hood from a Silverado. Haven't decided if I'll do the hood only or go all the way and replace the grill, bumper and radiator support too.

Just spoke with the dealer and was told that my order was accepted today. GM was supposed to start doing two tone again but they aren't doing it yet. Looks like I'll have to pick up another set of flares and have the bottom sprayed pewter like I did on the '01.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
