On an 04 it should be plug and play...the 99's require some modifications to work properly, that's why I got mine at JP Customs...they fixed the quirks and I got a plug and play unit that has been flawless so far. Then I had a local GM Cerfied shop to input my mileage and I was on the road :seeya:

Does the dealer have to take the cluster back out to program the mileage?   Or do they program it through the OBDII?

They replaced a defective one on my company truck and reset everything while it was in. It only took them 15 min to replace and reprogram. That was on an 04 GMC Sierra

A couple of caveats, in case you may not have been aware of them (I'm not trying to imply that you weren't already aware of either one):

1) You have to use an '03+ cluster in an '03+ vehicle; e.g., an '02 cluster won't work on an '04 due to the redesign of the DIC for '03+, among other things.

2) The possibility exists that some current OEM replacement clusters available from third-party vendors (e.g., JPCustoms) applicable to '03+ vehicles may be using '05 cores. Although an '05 cluster core will work on an '03+ vehicle, I have read that the DIC on the '05 clusters no longer include neither the distinctive "Personal" and "Business" trip meters (I think it's just trip A/B or something simple like that), nor the instant fuel economy readout. These may not be that big a deal for many folks, but just wanted to make you aware of the possibility.

I put a JPS Escalade cluster in my 99. :wtf: After installing it I did notice I had to drive for a while before it would register a temperature on the tranny. How much did it cost for the dealer to change the mileage? I did not change mine, just put the sticker on the door.
