Hope someone will know what this is.. I have a 2004HD with the Locking rearend and automatic, 4wd. ok the poping or clunk is only when and after rolling backwards.. this is with or without giving gas.. if on a slight hill and I let it roll backwards I hear it does not do it everytime but it is starting to do it even more.

it only does it while moving backwards!

I have got on it in drive and reverse and do not hear it, but then roll back about 20 feet and it does it??

I should also mention this is a 2004 brand new with less then 2000 miles on it.

This noise does not seem to be related to torque on the rear starting or stoping..

Its Gots Me Clunking?????

hey man had same problem. when going to the local dealer where i bought truck at have a lot of freinds there i might add too. they took the rear end apart (pumpkin cover) off and showed me the way locking rear works on it. and explained to me that was the rear end disengaging itself fron using the locking diff. it has happened to me alittle not too too much but it was disturbing when 1st heard. so that is my 2 sense not saying that would be only noise comming from the rear end bt that is my opinion especailly since its sooo new of a truck. hope that helps

Without knowing anything else about your truck and I may be way out in left field but I am going to offer a thought.

The situation you describes reminds me of a dragging brake shoe in drum brakes. if the vehicle has been sitting for more than a couple of hours the front-side shoe has had time to 'settle' onto the drum and sort of stick to it. When you start to back up, the shoe gets 'pulled' high until the 'stickiness' is gone and it then snaps back into place with a clunk. This is especially true if the brakes are not properly adjusted (balanced pressure front-side to back-side shoe) or there is a problem with the slave cylinder or cylinder plungers (i.e., not fully seated in the cylinder). Rust/brake dust collected in the drum will cause this 'stickiness' situation also. I have also heard disk brake pads do this but not as often (especially if there is a broken keeper or hold down spring).

My daughters Neon does this every morning. We've had the drums turned, shoes replaced, mounting hardware (springs etc) replaced, with no joy. We know it is the brakes because we've had it on the lift and have manually turned the wheels like we are backing up and the clucking is coming from inside the brake drum assembly. There is no excess wear we can detect and no problems with stopping ability. In her case, the car just does it.

Good luck, hope it is something simple.

bummed.

my 04 Hd did this as well. EXACTLY what you are describing. I took the rear disc/drum apart and loosened up the parking brake a bit. Problem solved
