Tires

I am looking into replacing my tires on the 2500hd and would like some feedback from the guys running 285/75/16 tires. Are there any pros and cons to this size? The wheels are the factory chrome and I am not sure they will fit and or ride, wear and handle ok. Feedback will help me to make my choice on tire size. Thanks for help on this matter!!

There is plenty of info on this topic if you use the search function. Opinions are like a-holes and elbows, everybody has at least one. I run that size and love them. I have the BFG MT's. I had to crank my t-bars and trim my lower valance to make them fit. They do reduce your mpg about 1 mpg, but the looks are well worth it. Some guys say that they are way to wide to put on a factory rim. I am getting good wear with 40-45psi and rotations every 5k.

Yeah my buddy has 285s on the factory alloys on his 2001 2500HD. They look great. We didn't have to trim anything on his or crank the bars though.

Thanks everybody!! the tire dealer is trying to sell me on some Kumho KL41 AT tire still looking at the 255/85/16 also. Anyone know if Kumho is a good tire? I have not seen many around here on trucks.

I have heard nothing but good comments on Kumhos. They're not a tire in the limelight but they are very reasonably priced and hold up really well. For my next set I'm looking at the road venture mud terrains.

Got 'em on my 05 2500 HD 4x4. No trimming required, did turn the t-bars up a bit and re-aligned the front end. The tire shop did all that, they do it a lot they say. No regrets here, drives great.

I held off on responding to this thread because I knew I would have personal experience if only I waited until this week.

I just returned from the tire store, where BFG 295/75/16 ko's were mated to my factory aluminium wheels (05 d/a crew cab 4x4). We had to trim the grey plastic valence slightly on the inside (but not on the outside nor did we have to trim in a diagonal line away from the tire). We did not adjust the torsion bars. The truck actually looks pretty good with the taller/wider tires, and the rake from rear to front is not nearly as noticeable with the new tires.

I'm happy as lark right now.

The pics aren't the greatest (as my digital camera is probably 5 years old), but they give you the general view. The tires are BFG ko's, 295/75/16. No torsion bar turns, just slight shaving on grey air dam and trimming of front and rear plastic splash guards on driver's side. Passenger's side only needed very minor shaving on air dam, nothing on the splash guards. Also, tied back the e-brake cable with zip ties.

Night after tires went on:

Profile view of truck at the office this morning (it is also sitting on a slight decline, sitting level you wouldn't notice the rake as much):

Closer view of driver's side front tire and wheel. You can see the slight trim to the air dam and you can also see the 295's do a good job of using every bit of available space:

They do rub slightly when backing at hard angles. Oh well, I'm not interested in trimming any more.

285 Nitto Terra Grapplers. This pic was taken the day after I bought my truck. Notice the ugly wheels I had the dealer remove :)

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
