Interior Dome Light

Has anyone replaced their interior overhead dome light?

 

In a different post, USA1Fan mentioned replacing the dome light. I would like to have a little more control over how my dome light goes on (or does not go on) when I open the doors, or want interior light. Those little map lights just aren't good enough sometimes.

 

I suppose a re-wire would be needed, for as it currently stands the dome light only gets juice when the door is opened, or when the remote door-open button is pressed.

 

If you've done it, did instructions for re-wiring come with the unit? Where did you get the light and how much $$.

My truck is an extended cab. The dome light I'm talking about is the one just above and behind the front seats in the middle. The factory part comes on as you mentioned- with doors, keyless entry, or when you use the interior light setting on the instrument cluster dimmer switch. The map lights can be activated independently by pressing their switch which works if the wife needs to look at the map or something while I'm driving.

 

That wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have kids that occasionally bring with them the need to turn on a light for seeing in back while driving down the road (example- 3 year old drops his favorite toy into the floorboard and wife has to find it). Right now the only way I can give them light is to turn on ALL the interior lights, including the front map lights. Needless to say that's extremely annoying to me as the driver when it's pitch black outside and I'm trying to see to drive.

 

The replacement dome light I'm planning to buy looks very much like the standard dome in the rear, but has two separate lights with switches that allow them to be turned on or off independently of the interior switch (just like the map lights).

JP Customs says it comes with a wiring harness, so hopefully it can be turned on even the motor is off. I' ll contact JP to confirm that.

I got one of those off of ebay a few months back for $10. Works perfect. just my 2 cents..

Yeah that dome light with the 2 buttons is from a Tahoe. They work great and are easy to wire up.

Wow. That sucks. The price has gone up since I first found them (I believe it was more like $25 last I had looked). Either that or I'm just totally confused. I've only been waiting because I plan to buy several different things for mods at the same time- around mid-May.

Hey, there is one out there now, from a tahoe/yukon that you get two for 19. both has map lights on the side, and then the center light. Be alot of lights in your truck.

 

I just wish that i could figure out how to get the lights on the long console from a tahoe, to come on with the dome light. There are 2 map lights, come on with you push the buttons, but wont with door. The new dome light , like the one above, comes on with door, and also when push the buttons. Just not the freaking console lights

for a couple of bucks i would ckeck auto dismantlers. see if thay have any, and just wire it in...

I have 3 of these lights for sale. They were for the hummers I believe. I will take 25.00 each but no harness or instructions. Note You will have to ad a constant hot wire to make them work . Two wires are already there for the factory one but you need the third for the light to work with the buttons on the light. Email [email protected] for pic.
