i've seen over and over the discussions about the flowmaster and K&N improving high RPM performance-- i have both and they do that very well.

Shotr of tearing the engine apart and rebuilding, what will improve the low RPM performance on the 5.3 vortec???

From what I have read and Driven the 5.3, that motor was never designed to make much low end. Other then a camshaft change(don't think any are available) you may not have a lot of options yet. Most performance parts like a computer download are designed for RPM and power rather then low end.Try a lower geared rearend.

I own a 2001 silverado with 4.8l. I added Edelbrock shortie headers and K&N FIPK.

I did this to improve low end on highway so truck wouldn't downshift on our Missouri Hills. It has worked well. Truck pulls hills much better, often not downshifting at all. Runs on highway at 70mph about 100rpm less. I have also installed a EDELBROCK muffler, unfortunately louder than I planned. However all these mods have improved performance esp throttle response and better low end
