Quadrasteer - Any problems with wider tires?

Although it's probably a mute point now...just came from a GMC dealer and Chevy dealer to look into trading my 02 for an 05 with QS...none to be found...maybe a Denali (too much $$) in soon.

I currently have 285/60-17 on 4.5" backspace Centerlines (yes it's a 2WD, if I got a QS it would be 2wd as well) and would move the tire/wheels over if I did find a QS and the price was right

I'm sure there's someone out there that has put on 285's (offroad size height) on thier 4wd QS, any problems?

There can be. My understanding is that the reason the QS's have the wider rear wheel track is so that the tires don't hit the frame when they're turning. I've never gotten under mine to see how close it comes but it's something to be aware of.

The stock QS system is already over sized in width and why the rear wheel flares have "marker lights" on them. Code says anything over must be lighted.

Larger yet might push the width even farther over the limit, so better check your local codes before going any farther.

Please post back what your local codes say about over sized in width.

Lots of room on a QSteer for bigger tires without any problems. A friend of mine has a Sierra Denali QSteer with 305/40/22 Nitto Extreme's and a McGaughy's 2"/4" drop kit and still has no problems.

I'm running 305-50-20's on 10" wide Weld Velocity 8 rims. The only clearance issues I had were just cutting back the front fender liners. The tread on the tires catch that when you back up and turn. Otherwise no clearance probs.

:cool::D

I have an 03 QS and love it. get your dealer to do a search for one like you want. Once you drive it, Tow with it and especially back a trailer with it you will never go back to a regular truck. :D

You SHOULD still be able to order a truck or 'burb with QS for another couple of weeks (Apr 8 final cut-off I think). I ordered mine on Feb 17 and it was built and ready to be shipped from factory on Mar 10. I should have it in a day or two.

So get exactly (or as close as GM will let you) what you want 'cause you do not know what or how Quadrasteer will surface on next. You still get to negotiate price and take advantage of whatever rebates or special incentives are in effect when the truck comes in (not when you order).

Good luck.... it's not too late!!

I was always curious...Is it possible to lift a quadra steer truck?

Lifting a Quad is no different than lifting any other truck. The only two differences are the wiring harness for the rear steer might need extending, and you have to watch the pinion angle vs. rear steer caster angle. Not a big deal at <3", after that either index the knuckles or use a cv at the pinion.

Lots of lifted Quads running around. Go check out my homepage (link in sig). We have one with 37" tires on a 6" lift. Seen one with like 17" of lift on 40's.... a bit much, really.... but BIG !!!!

285/75R16s here with cranked up torsion bars. I had to trim the front of the front wheel wells. Really can't tell though. The back of the fronts rub a little at full turn in reverse only. Forward is all clear. Gotta get a 2" body lift soon.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
