97 GMC tranny problem

I have a 1997 GMC extended cab 4 wheel drive. Lately the tranny seems like the torque converter locks up from time to time, like it won't disengage when stopping the truck. It will almost kill the engine when I come to a stop, then smooth out, and almost die again repeatedly, the idle just bounces up and down. Then once I get underway again it seems to be taking off in second or third gear really bogged down acting when you take off. When stopped and running really rough like this you can shift it to neutral and it smooths out immediately. I have never had a check engine light come on when this has happened. This is an intermittent problem but lately has seemed to occur a little more frequently. The tranny doesn't seem to be slipping at all during any of the time this occurs. Any thoughts or opinions on what my problem may be would be appreciated.

Even though your light hasn't come on you can still have a trans code in the PCM, have it ran and see if any TCC codes come up.

This was a common problem in the old 125 trans (front wheel drive) but I gotta say I have never seen this on any other GM trans. It's certainly possible though. You'll have to take it in so it can be checked to be sure this is what it is.

Thanks for the advice, I was hoping it was something someone else had the same problem with and had a easy fix for. I sure hope it isn't the tranny going bad, cause I know that's exxxxxpensive to fix.
