My wife and I are looking to buy a new car for her, something small and compact. She really like the VW Jetta, but I'm not that familiar with them. Can anybody help me out with any information, experiences, or sites that have good info?

Thanks.

Elwood,

Try a Google search for: VW Jetta Forum

I don't have any experience other than gluing a piece of trim back on one, but there appears to be a lot of links in google.

Regards,

Jake

PS - Fix the cigarette lighter!

I have never driven one, but have been in a couple that friends of my own. I have never heard them complain about the vehicles and they seemed to be quite dependable and safe (one was in a big wreck while driving a Jetta). These where both the gas and diesel versions.

I've heard of quality problems with VWs, but one of our nieces has a Jetta TDI and she has had no troubles except the ones caused by her hitting things. I used to own a number of VWs (4 between 1977 and 1988) and, while they were fun to drive, they had an above-average number of expensive repairs. I don't have any direct experience with current VWs.

Take a look at the Pontiac Vibe. It's made by NUMMI in California alongside the Toyota Corolla and is very similar to the Toyota Matrix. One of my friends bought one for his wife and she loves it. However, he regrets the way all the seats fold down and she can get all kids of OPJ (other people's junk) inside from garage sales. Also, make sure she takes it for a good test drive because the steering wheel is rather close to the dash rather than close to the driver.

Was looking at VW Jetta Wagon with 5 speed and tdi Diesel for my girlfriend and I have to say it drove real well and was a very nice car, and at 47mpg on the interstate

The only problem is that VW is going to a new body style for next year and they won't be making the diesel for couple years.

Well after digging though the cobbwebs in my brain i just remembered that I have driven the TDI version once when I was being the DD for a friend. Smooth driving and response from the engine, great mileage too.

You might want to see what rebates are out on current modes. I know dealers will be give huge rebates to get rid of the current ones so that they can make room for the new ones. My cousin just bought an 04 Jetta, and it is a nice car. She bought it in Jan. so I can't comment on the relibability. A friend of ours has an 04 Passat and after 14,000 miles it is fine. I've heard VWs have their problems, but have never seen this in real life, mainly because I haven't been around many of them.
