285 how much to trim?

Recommended Posts

I ordered some 285's and they should be in tommorow. I made my mind up that id rather trim then crank the t-bars. I was just wondering how much and where you guys trim?

I took a hacksaw and trimmed about 1/2" off the inner tip of the front spoiler on both sides. I cut off a triangular piece about the size of a penny, on each side.

Took about 60 seconds per side.

I mounted Toyo Open Country 285/75-16D's. RWL's turned inside. Blackwalls showing. Run 50 in the front and 40 in the rear, on factory aluminum rims.

Some people don't have to do any trimming at all.

Depends a little on what exactly you're mounting them on...HINT HINT.

Jack up the t-bars. Not that much difference in ride...and look a whole lot better than the nose down. I cranked t-bars and didn't have to trim a thing.

I bought re-indexed keys "green keys" and their at the lowest setting. I ended up with about 2" of lift. My buddy's 2500HD is lifted closer to 3".

I didn't like mine up that far. The ride began to suffer.

I don't want to add the nerf bars to be able to get into my truck. With the 285/75-16D's, a 5'-11 guy can just get by without a step.

No lift...and a very slight trim as shown in my post above...it works for me.

Well i put my tires on today and they dont rub at all except when i have it turned all the way and backing up. I didnt crank the t-bars or anything. You think i should trim some to get them to clear when i back up?

My interference with the front spoiler happened not too far off straight-ahead. Turn the front wheels about 5 degrees to the right and the left side would touch the front spoiler, same thing happened to the right tire when turning 5 degrees left. I just didn't want to be driving through (or backing through) some rough terrain and have the front spoiler get mangled. If yours don't touch at all, you're probably ok. The suspension geometry will have the front tires move slightly back as the suspension compresses, so they're not likely to touch even if you're going through a dip.

But if you wanted to be on the safe side, the hacksaw trick takes about 60 seconds per side to get to where mine are, as shown in the picture in my first post in this thread (I think it's the 2nd post). I gave myself about 1/2" more clearance by doing what I did. That spoiler cuts like butter.

The full-lock rubbing also happens on my truck, only noticeable while backing up. I decided not to do anything about *that* problem. It's not as likely to grab and tear anything up. It's a flat surface of the fender liner rubbing against the tread of the tire, and so there's nothing to catch and tear. I just use the audio technique, if I hear it rubbing, I back off on the steering a tad.

I put 285's on 10" wide wheels on my 03 gmc b/4 i lifted it and i had to trim and raise the torsion bars. if you use stock wheels you should just have to trim a little bit of the corner :D

I been thinking about going to the 285 to, but i was just wondering how much will it change the gearing or any at all ? would it be for the better or the worst ? and how about gas mileage ? better or worst ? my son is also looking into getting this size tire for his 1500 he has 265 now and would like to go alittle bigger would he need to do the same? trim alittle ? or ? he is thinking more on thelines of a mud tire where i am lookin at A/T type tire will the mud tire with the bigger lugs give him more of a hard time getting the to fit ? or will he need to have a lift kit put in ? thanks.

I have a 02' GMC 2500HD 4x4. I bought this truck new, and pulled the factories off and put 285/75/R16 A/T on it. I'm now on my second set and havent had to trim or modify anything on my truck.

Daubs,

What size / brand tire are you running? You say you have only cranked the TB's? I have got to get these 245's off my truck!! I have had it for 2 days now and already want to mod it :tear: .
