Tonneau Covers???

Recommended Posts

I think I like the idea of a tonneau cover that I can fold in segments. If I go someware and purchase something I don't want to have to go home to take a one piece off so I can use my bed.

With that being said, is there one out there that can fold up and sturdy enough to take some weight?

I have it made up in my mind that a tonneau cover will help with gas mileage. I have a new 2005 CC/SB w/3.73's and am getting about 17 to 18 mpg.

Tell me your experiences and what you did to help improve your mileage.

Thanks in advance.

I personally own an Access Roll up cover and I'm happy with it because it won't compromise the bed like the hard cover do. I did notice a 1 mpg increase on the highway and it looks a lot better than the OEM covers. Will there is my two cents

good luck on finding a cover. :)

I had an Extang full tilt and loved it. Yhe only reason I sold it & bought a topper was the family grew. It was me, my wife & the dog & cat & now I have twin boys as well. We travel up north to my inlaws & the animals ride in the bed now. I understand the impulse purchase, but if you thought you might buy something large it would take about a minute to remove before you left home. I onhestly don't remember mpg, it was an inprovement though. Good luck w/ your decision.

I like the soft roll-up covers like Access and Truxedo. But, a hard cover you can load on is useful. My Avalanche had that. You might also check onto some of the aluminum retractable covers.

I can't speak to the mileage improvement; I've only had it for three days, but I really like the look.

I installed my fold-a-cover about three weeks ago. Still doing mileage tests and I've been running high test 93 since I installed the cover. But I'll be running my normal "Regular" octane that I used to run for the next three tanks, so gimme 3 more weeks from today and I can tell you definitively if the Fold-a-cover is responsible for any change. So far I haven't really seen any increase, but no drop either- but that's comparing high octane w/cover vs. low octane without.

As far as the ability for it to carry a load- wouldn't count on it. The panels seem sturdy enough. I've set small things on them as I load or unload the truck (less than 40 pounds) and didn't have any problems, but I wouldn't try to tie anything on or put anything heavier than I already had on them. They really aren't made for that. Pretty similar in that area to the soft covers. The only advantage is that these are rigid, and add just a bit more theft deterrent. Notice I said deterrent- mainly based on the looks. I'd bet it wouldn't take any longer to break into than slitting a soft cover for a determined thief.

Utility is top notch though. I can open either the front or back panel individually. Both panels are lockable, but unlike what I've read for previous versions of the Fold-a-cover, my LS series can also be left unlocked (latch handles are turned separately from the lock itself now). The bed can be 3/4 uncovered if you need that much extra space for taller items by opening the rear and folding the panels forward onto the front panel, then using the straps'n'snaps to fasten the stack securely in place. If you really need the whole bed length it's a bit more work, mainly because you'll need a tool to loosen the bracket that holds the hinge between the frontmost panel and the next one back. Otherwise the panels themselves take up very little space when folded (ie.- when you remove them and need to store them out of the way), and weigh under 50 pounds.

Even with the panels stacked at the front you still have the full length of the bed open- no large boxes intruding below bedrail height like the hard rollup covers except for the two brackets at the rear edge of the top panel and those only go down just below the top rail and extend in maybe 3 inches from the bed rails. I'd give the edge to the rollup soft covers over any hard cover if you occasionally need the tonneau to allow use of the whole bed with taller items though.

In short, I love it! :tear:

RealTruck, I appreciate your reply. If I were looking for a soft Tonneau I would definately look at your products.

I'm looking for a cross between the two. I like the security of the one piece hard units and I like the accessibility of the "soft" roll up. I don't like the lack of retraction on the hard one piece and I don't like the lack of security in the soft roleups.

The pannel system seems like an excellent compromise.

I just bought one of these www.diamomdbackaccessories.com and am very happy - supports 1200 lbs. -- made to put a 4-wheeler on top. Access to the front and back of the bed. The toughest one on the market and looks great.
