Weird noise from the steering wheel. . .

I've noticed a weird noise coming from the steering wheel, but it only seems to happen when I'm backing. . .and more so to the left; it usually doesn't make the sound when I back to the right. It never happens going forward.

It sounds, and feels like (in the steering wheel), like an unlubricated hinge on a door would feel. Do you think there might be something going on with the power steering?

The fact that is only in reverse makes me suspect that it might be a motor mount or chassis bolt problem as the torque on chassis area near steering box if different in reverse than when going forward.

I brought it back to my dealer twice for this noise, a humming or growling sound while backing up at low speeds and turning the wheel. First time, the obligatory "failed to duplicate" or "unable to verify noise" or what have you.

Second time, service writer with me in the truck backing up and he hears it. Guess what they changed..... The transmission slip yoke! :P And you know what I have yet to hear it again! :P

Is that a pretty spendy/involved fix? Unfortunately, mine's not on warranty anymore.

Here you go.

This is a pretty good thread with the TSB and prices.

Thanks Wingnut, that was very informative.

Is this something that will continuously worsen? Or will it lead to other problems down the line if not fixed? Mine only does it when I reverse and turn to the left - so it's something I could deal with if it doesn't lead to more problems.
