Just got my new-to-me '00 Sierra 4.8 auto with 3.42 rear.  It's white, chrome wheels, SLE package, extended cab, spray-in bed liner, etc.  The wifey bought it for me last Wednesday.  It's got 34K miles and a grey interior that looks factory fresh.  Hell, it even smelled new.  Not a scratch on it that I could see.  And the tires still have over 50% thread left.  I got it for $18K and some change.  

 

Just curious what kinda mpg's I could expect out on the open road.  I'll drive it to and from work over 80 miles a day!!!

I get 15.5 to 16 with mine however I changed my tires from 265 to 285's so my milage is actually a bit higher. I do most of my driving on country roads and most trips are under 10 miles.

My friend has a 4.8L and auto tranny and is getting about 18-19 mpg's.

 

Remember these trucks aren't very arodynamic (sp?) and when you get them over a certain speed they really like to drink fuel.  The 3.42 gears will help you alot, and you should be able to cruise in the low 70's and upper 60's mph and still get very good mpg's.

Welcome aboard Cap'n Hook!    I'll have to introduce you to one of my friends....Dr. Hook.

 

I have a 2001 GMC SLE Ext Auto 3:42 2wd....  Same truck as you pretty much.  I get about 16-17 mpg around town.

 

On the hwy I get closer to 20 (I once got 21.7)...

 

anyhow my 4.8 seems to do better at 75 mph for fuel economy.  I towed a flatbed 8' X 16' trailer round trip to Tampa last month....  Got 17 mpg @ 80-85 mph.  This was over a 1500 mile trip...  I was truly impressed with the mileage.

 

#1    I was hauling butt with the trailer the whole way there.

#2    I was hauling butt empty the whole way back.  

 

I expected to get about 13-14 because I had the trailer.  NOT SO!

 

You will be pleased with the 4.8...(at least I think so)...Mine is a daily driver.  Only on occasion do I tow.
