Softening Suspension

Recommended Posts

I have a '89 GMC 1ton van and the suspension is hard as all get out.  I have replace all 4 shocks, but it is still way too rough.  What would be the best way to soften up the ride some more?  Thanks!

1 ton van is designed to carry heavy loads, hence the stiff ride. only way to soften it up would be to put lower rated springs on there or just haul a bunch of stuff around in the back. sorry.

there was a product out there that tied into the rear spring hanger that was supposed to deliver a softer ride, but I think it wasn't very effective.

Get some "smooth riding" tires and call it a day. There are actually smooth riding tires out there.

Plus there are a lot of crap tires whose manufacturers claim are smooth riding...HA! Once you've been fooled, you have their tires, and they have your money. Then it doesn't matter to them that they lied to you in their advertising, they're off targeting their next sucker!

But seriously, if you have Load Range E tires on there, and you don't need them because you're not hauling massive loads, drop down to Load Range C, in a tire you know is known for its smooth ride. You will feel an improvement.

I've heard flipping the smallest leaf, the overload leaf, helps. Don't know what that'd do to your weight rating.

You could remove a leaf, but that would definetely reduce your rating.

Do you really need a 1t van ??

Flipping a leaf? What exactly does that mean? Thanks.

Don't really need a one ton van:

HuskyMan, that is one far-out groovy van you got there  !!!!!

I'll snap a shot of my leaves later and point it out, yours might be different, but look at the smallest leaf. It shouldn't be touching at it's ends- hence, an overload leaf. When you add weight and the rest of the springs sag down, it'll start to make contact.

I've heard flip that one. Maybe the arc of it upside down, maybe they contact more than you think, I dunno ??? Just what I heard...

Isn't the singular of Huskies, Husky?

You are correct, but my school spells it Huskie. Maybe just to be unique, or maybe someone really f'ed up when choosing the mascot. There are a lot of Huskies out there: NIU, Washington, UConn

So.... If I want to major in english I shouldn't go to that school right?

I don't think majoring in English at any school would be a good idea. :driving:
