I jut bought a 98 S-10 SS as my daily driver. It has 117k on it. Besides changing the fluids, is there anything that needs to be checked, changed or replaced? :driving:

Those about all I can think of right off.

Check your oil lines going to and from the filter too. Those pressurized have tendency to burst in the late 90s modles, and when they go you lose ALOT of oil fast. If they look like they need replaced I'd go ahead and do it before they break. I've got a 1999 Blazer and I've replaced them 2 times in 90,000 miles.

definite flush and fill of the cooling system, get the windshield wiper motor replaced under recall, replace tranny fluid and filter, clean the throttle body and blade (use Seafoam from NAPA, follow directions), and run a couple bottles of injector cleaner through the system, then one bottle everytime you change the oil.

If a tune hasn't been done, that would be on the agenda, and grease all the fittings for the front end, as well as the driveshaft if it's an ext cab.

good luck!

O2 Sensors, check the brake lines on the front to make sure they didnt get pinched, spark plugs, change the fluids in the engine and tranny, check the brakes while ya at it. Also fuel filter, air filter and thats all I can think of.

Drive the SOB untill the SES light comes on or untill you hear funny noises.

Suspension/steering is another concern. They are great trucks but are very "old school" in terms of the chassis.

Since they have LOTS of zerk fittings that need to be lubed all over the place, and they often get forgotten - I have heard about problems with ball joints, idler arms, etc. Give the front suspension a once-over - and if you plan on doing your own maintenance, get a grease gun and keep that old-fashioned front-end all lubed up.

My '03 2wd LS has 40,100 miles on it and has been a WONDERFUL truck. Zero problems so far.

Check the condition of the soft brake lines going to the cylinders for signs of cracking/damage.

Might not be a bad time to replace the trans filter.

Check the shocks for signs of leakage. Check for possible bent mounting points or cracked welds on same.

Check the condition of the exhaust. The front Y-pipe is expensive.

Replace the fuel filter.

Pull the front wheels & clean/repack the bearings.

Might also go somewhere to see if there are any codes stored in the computer. This can give you a clue about past issues (if they haven't been cleared).

I don't worry too much about my vehicles with high mileage because I know how they've been driven & maintained. Buying a high mileage vehicle from someone else is a crap shoot. You may get a good one You may not.

Just my humble opinion, after racing, driving & maintaining my own cars/trucks since 1969.
