Adding NAV without BOSE...is it possible?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I'm new to the forum and I just recently purchased a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe :) . Unfortunately I could'nt afford the LT model so what the heck...I got the LS instead. I really love the truck :seeya: and now I would like to add a NAV unit to it. Problem is I don't have the BOSE system. I read on numerous sites that without this upgrade there is no way possible to add a NAV unit. I've also heard there's a Integrated Navigation Radio with a built in amp for such vehicles. Can this be done? Or am I out of luck?

Please Help :D

I'll let someone with a little more experience get into the details,But if you look over to the left side of the screen and click on "JPCustoms.com" they list a touchscreen NAV system for trucks without the BOSE system,So I would say that you can add it without having the BOSE system.

By the way....Welcome aboard :chevy:

The INR for the non-bose systems is part no. 10352079 and it was available for the Buick Rendezvoux, but it works perfect in our non-bose trucks. Model Electronics Inc. has them.

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum - always owned foreign vehicles, but several months ago bought my wife an '05 Envoy SLT. At the time I was not concerned about paying the premium for the upgraded audio, figuring I would upgrade anyway. Should've come here first, I didn't realize that the data bus was going to make upgrading such a PITA. Anyway, needlesstosay, all I would really like to do at this point is raplce the existing single disc H/U with a nav radio, preferably the TNR, and possible add the disc changer. As things currently stand, I have the non-Bose system.

I have read through the 33 page thread and to my knowledge these questions were not addressed. If they were then I apologize in advance. My first question will tie this post into this thread:

1) If I were to find and install the INR from the Rendezvous would I retain the RSA?

2) I've seen on jpcustoms a TNR listed as compatible with the non-Bose system - but no part number listed. I've been inundated with all of the part numbers for the lux and non-lux tnr's, but don't recall ever seeing anyone post the part number for a non-Bose tnr. Anyone know what that part number might be?

Thanks in advance and I am confident that what knowledge I gain here will be invaluable to me in my quest to add navigation.

The TNR unit will work fine, however the power output is sort of lacking so you may want to consider at least a small amp.

My understanding is that neither the lux nor the non-lux TNR have an internal amp and thus require and must interface with either the Bose premium or luxury amps. That's why it's important if you have the Bose system to make sure you get the right H/U. The non-Bose H/U's have an internal amp. Are you saying that if I am replacing a non-Bose H/U that I can replace it with either the lux or the non-lux TNR? You suggest using a small amp... wouldn't I be "required" to use an external amp if using either the lux or non-lux TNR's? I would think my best bet then would be to buy either the lux or non-lux amp depending upon which TNR I purchased? Am I mistaken?

Is there any TNR which has an internal amp such that the use of an external amp is not required? This is my wife's car and she (nor I for that matter) are audiophiles. As long as the sound it decent then we wouldn't have a problem.

The TNR actually has an internal amp in it but it doesn't really do anything (the IC is attached to the back side of the aluminum heat sink on the left side of the unit). The TNR requires reprogramming to utilize in non externally amplified applications because the original software doesn't know to employ the internal amp. Well, that's what I had to do to make the radio work in an Impala a few years ago.

C C C, it will do what you want (assuming you get the right model and it is properly programmed to your vehicle), but the output is very low and for some reason it seems to be even lower on cd?????! We just installed one in an '05 SS pu last week (non bose, non lux) and he liked it for a few days then had us back out to put an amp in with it. the tnr has VERY low headroom and you may be surprised at how low the volume ceiling is or it may turn out to be just fine.

Hi!!

New to the web site but trying to use it as a resource for adding Nav to my 06 Sierra. I have speakers that say Bose howerver I do not have the Y91 option. I am unsure if this means I do not have an amp at all or if I just don't have the premium amp.

I just purchased a nav on ebay that is for NON-Bose and Bose systems. Will I need and AMP for this?

06hd,

You prolly have the NON LUX Bose amp. Here are my suggestions to you:

1) Read thru the complete thread that LINDA started about installing NAV - all 33 pages. The thread is titled: NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado 123» 33 It is long and winding, but it does cover it all many times over. The info is complete AND acurate to my account.

2) Download a few PFD's sited on that thread. THey will show you pictures and give you maps for the pin transfers.

3) WIth all of this info in hand, go back to your truck and confirm what you have. Check and Confirm RPO codes in your glove box....Check and confirm GM part nymbers...Check and confirm amp shape size and location....check and confirm connector wire colors and their locations.

You will then know what to do with what you have.

What nav HU did you buy?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the info!! Actually I just got it and found I got screwed by the ebayer. I was told it was new and compatable with a pic of the 05 model. The one that I got was out of and 03 Cadilac with the buttons that require the LUX Amp. So I am working with Ebay on a fraud clam. Anyway I found a guy that has the UQ7 only setup. So the attemp at Nav goes on...

You could try to find a Lux amp to do the install with. I did the install with it, and got the amp for only $50.

There is no such thing as a Delphi (GMT800) nav unit that can work in both a Bose and Non-Bose setup.

The nav units made for Bose systems do not have an internal amp. No programming can make a Bose headunit work in a non Bose setup.

They are completely different units and can not be interchanged with programming, the hardware in different.

If you have the Bose system in your truck and you do not see a code Y91 or Y92 then you have the Bose premium system and it does have an amp. The luxury Bose systems are the ones that will show a code of Y91 or Y91 and those are only put the SUV's and Denali's.

Just to let you know the Bose premium setup is actually the non-lux amp (cheap non class II amp)

The Lux amp is the class II Digital amp that has the codes Y91 or Y92.
