Noise from rear axle

Recommended Posts

I had the radio off and the windows down and heard a strange clanking noise, when the rear tires went over a bump. It sounds like there is a lug nut in the center cap. The noise has sort of a vibrating , like something is rattling when I drive over a bump. I took the raer center caps off and removed the trailer receiver but the noise is still there. My truck is a 2002 HD CC. Any ideas?

Mine has done that since I got it. Nothing's loose under there, I've looked extensivly. I think it's either the exhaust or the leaf springs.

Wasn't there something out about the leaf spings makin noise and some sort of pad or something like that that could be added to help stop that noise.

Mine does the same, it's the leaf springs. It appears that there should be 2 pads or something on the bottom leaf spring. There are 2 square holes on the leaf spring with nothing in them !?

Leaf spring isolators, its like a rubber glove that goes on the end of the overload spring prevents the overload from slapping the other springs. It's also possible to put a glob of silicone on the overload spring, or so I've heard, to accomplish the same thing.

The next time your in a sears hardware or home depot, go to the PVC pipe dept. and get four 2" x 1 1/2" rubber reducers (1.89 ea.) and slip'em up onto the helper springs. My units have been on for a couple of months and don't look any worse for wear. I ain't kidding this really works. :jester:

Mine did the same thing. I found thet the brake pads where actually rattling in the caliper. Try driving over the same bump with brakes applied, and see if the sound goes away. If so, it is the brake pads.

i had a problem with the spring insulators breaking out. they are easy to install and take about a minute to install. if yours are gone (as mine were) jack up the frame to give a little space between the helper spring and the main spring pack. the insulators are a 2 piece set, the insulator and the instalation grommet. place the insulator on the grommet and stick it in the hole. when you let down on the frame use a prybar to set the insulator and put some grease on top for lubrication. riding without a load the impact over bumps seems to break them out after a while.
