2005 5.3 Oil Level

Recommended Posts

I changed the oil/filter in 2005 Yukon XL with 5.3. Refilled with 6 quarts as the manual says. Right after changing the oil I started it up let it run a minute or so and then shut it down. Waited a few minutes and checked the oil. Right at the full mark.

Then let it sit overnite and checked it again. It is about 1/4 quart over the full mark. Should I be concerned with it reading 1/4 quart overfilled ?

Nah.... I wouldn't worry. 1/4 over isn't enough to cause an issue. After about 2,000 miles, you might be down to the proper level anyways.

I don't even check mine anymore when doing an oil change. 6 qts and away I go. As mentioned above, a 1/4 of a qt isn't going to hurt anything either way. The extra is just oil that settled after letting it sit overnight.

My wifes 4.3 is supposed to get 4.5 qts with a filter change and my 8.1 is supposed to get 6.5 with a filter change. Her 4.3 gets a full 5 qts. and my 8.1 gets a full 7 qts. I absolutely hate having 1/2 qts of oil laying around the garage.

I also like being able to pick up a case of 12 qts and getting two oil changes with no need to buy odd amounts every time I change oil.

Yeah, that 1/2 quart of oil usually seems to disappear on the 496's before the next oil change anyway.

Same exact thing happened in my 05 5.3 Z71. I drained some of the oil out until I was at the full mark. Strange how it changed overnight. :banghead:

Why is that so strange? Think about all the places the oil goes inside your engine. Letting it sit a few minutes isn't enough time for all the oil to drain back to the pan.
