Erratic oil pressure

Erratic oil pressure gauge.

 

Hi –

I have a 1997 Silverado with the 5.7 vortec engine. The oil pressure gauge in the dash is acting erratic. It “jumps around”. I believe the oil pressure sending unit is faulty.

 

Can someone tell me where the oil pressure sending unit is located?

Is there a way to determine if it is faulty?

On our trucks, we have what is called a variable pressure oil gauge or something like that. What it means is that it is supposed to move as the engine revs. The sending unit is on the drivers side lower portion of the motor I think. Not sure. I do believe it is below the headers though. It will have 1 or more wires coming out of it and should be a inexpensive unit. I would check the wires to make sure that they are not grounding and causing the jumpiness.
