engine problems

A freind of mine has a '95 extended cab short box Z71 with 120,000 miles on a 350. This past weekend while pulling a small pop up camper he started using oil, about a quart in 120 miles. Before this is maybe used a quart in 3000 miles. He says it still runs fine and the gas mileage is still good but he is getting oil out the exhaust pipes.

He is going to pull the spark plugs and see if they can tell us anything.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? Rings, head gasket, cracked head???

Wouldn't think the rings would all of a sudden like that start using that much oil. Most likely the engine was run too hot and something happened, but with a bad head gasket or cracked head, he'd be losing coolant out the tailpipe. That's a ton of oil to be losing...that's gotta be pretty smoky. We had an old Astro van with the 4.3 that smoked on startup, but that turned out to be worn valve guide seals and it was easy to fix.

If the plugs come up normal than it's probably the exhaust seals leaking. The oil goes right into the exhaust and bypasses combustion. This happened to my '95 GMC Sierria 305ci. I was up to using 2.5 to 3 qts between 3000 mi oil changes.

My 95 z71 did the same thing and it was the exhaust valve seals that were bad causing the same problem.
