Locking tailgate kit

Great idea. As soon as I get a hard tonneau cover, I'm installing one. You can get them for well under a bill on ebay.

I bought the same kit he did (but I can't remember the name of the place and he probably will). It is just about the same thing you have linked but it was only 20 smething bucks. It was a fairly simple install. The hardest part is running the wire from the tailgate to the inside of the cab. If you have a 2003 or newer you have to go to the module under the dash, I believe older than 02 you can go to the door switch itself. I have a 4WD and ran the wire through the grommit (sp?) in the floor that the 4wd cable runs through. I will look through my old emails and see if I can come up with the link for you.

Most hard tonneau covers will cover the tailgate as well (mine does) and lock it down. Another added bonus for the tonneau.

Good post! I'd seen the Ebay one before, but thought $65 was too much for what it is.

$24.99 is much more reasonable, thanks! :seeya:

Have a locking tailgate ... it's awesome. No complaints. Works great.

FYI: You have an '03 Sierra ... what trim level? SLE or better?

My truck gave me a surprise - GM did away with the relays in the fusebox for these trucks. Instead they decided to run some class II databus wire b/t the BCM and the driver's door module (DDM) and use the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) to trigger the signal.

How your doors really unlock:

RKE receives signal from your fob. RKE transmits class II message to BCM. BCM decides this is door related, passes message to DDM. DDM knows to unlock doors. It in turn, applies power to a relay that actually drives the motor to pop the lock.

Bottom line: You get to go tap the wires going to the lock motor in the door to get this to work. It does work, no question; but I cursed out every engineer in GM while doing it.

Yes, very true. This is what changed from 02 to 03. I was able to find the wires under the dash though, so I didn't have to run wires through the door jam.

Becareful about those locking tailgates. My buddy had one on his 2000 model 1500 and it would lock and sometimes not unlock. One day we were hunting and it wouldn't unlock and we had to break the handle to get our stuff out of the back of the truck. He had one of the roll up covers on his truck.

No it wasn't a Pop N Lock. I don't know what brand it was. I tried to get him to take that freaking auto locking thing off and get a pop n lock. His used the power from the power door locks and the keyless remote to unlock his gate.

Weird, I've had mine for a while now and never had a problem with it...

I take that back... one time it didn't want to unlock, but I just hit unlock/lock again and it worked.

Was my fault though, you do need to adjust the lever inside and I forgot to do so.

I have a pop n lock power tailgate lock on my 01 ecsb. It worked great for 4 yrs then it made buzzing noise and woldnt lock,so it is unplugged now. Paid way to much to have it put in at local custom shop.
