Rear end

I'll be purchasing a 1500 - 2500hd truck...........I see some of the different rear ends and gears. The truck will be used for personal use but reason for getting is landscape sidework. I'll be getting a 2000+ truck and debating 4x4.

Would someone mind enlightening me on the different rear ends?

Example, which is better at say towing or mpg or what is the one thats "just right" etc.

Thanks!

If you are going to be doing alot of heavy towing then you will want the 4.10 gears. For daily driving with occasonal towing the 3.73 will be better for you and your wallet. They will help with the mpg.

ctfan hit the nail on the head. The only thing I have to add is that if you plan on putting bigger tires on the truck at all, go with the 4.10's so you don't have to regear unless you go really big.

yeah not a lot of towing will be go'n on, thats why there's delivery for customers to pay for haha.............ok so i don't need hte 4.10's then.

no when i go to a dealer or whatever to find a used truck what is the tranny name that i would be looking for?

i don't know if there are names for them or if they just go by the gears. i love asking them questions and they be like uhhhh, gears uhhhhh

Ha, give em heck!

The smaller trannies are the 4L60e and the 4L80e. The 80 is definately the better of the two and will take some punishment. The 60 isn't as strong, but if your not beating it up, you will be just fine with it. There's also the Allison, but thats only on the 8.1's and diesels. It's pretty dang solid. I believe the 4l80e only comes on the 2500's and up? Maybe it comes on the 1500HD's also. I'm not too sure.

The 1500HD does have the 4L80E tranny. Your question seems to make me think that you think the tranny and rear end gear are related. That is not the case, they are seperate option codes. If you are looking at a truck and want to know the rear gear you can look in the glove box for the option codes. GT4 is a 3.73 and GT5 is a 4.10 rear end.
