Still getting a clunk

Recommended Posts

I have a clunk when I stop and go in 1st gear. I wouldn't say it's a real bad and highly noticeable clunk, but something isn't right. Can someone point me in the right direction to figure out whats wrong?

Where does the clunk sound come from? Notice any other symtoms like a vibration when driving?

It could be several diffrent things, so that should help narrow it down a bit.

No vibration at any speed when driving. Clunk feels like it's in the driveline. I had a new transfer case and slip yoke installed back in December of '04 because of a defect in my case.

I was going to say it sounded like a slip yoke, but yours has been replaced... however, I guess that doesn't mean that it still could be bad.

Check your Universal Joints for slop.

If there is slop will I be able to turn the shaft by hand with the joints not moving? I've never had to mess with U joints and drive shafts. If there is slop, will the joints need replacing or just some tightening in order?

Have you checked your rear diff out? If you get under the truck, try to turn the read drive shaft and see if there is play. The rear end might be beat up and have some slop in it. Some slop in the rear end should be normal, but a lot is a bad thing.

Amen to the u-joints being easy, I used to have to replace them every 10,000 miles in my jeep becasue I would blow them up off-roading.

I started the truck and put it in neutral (and of course put the parking brake on). I put my hands on the drive shaft and was able to turn it back and forth about 1/2 an inch. Is that kind of play normal?

that seems like a lot, i know some of these trucks have that kind of split second lag then it feels like either the transmission or the rear end catches, my friends 2001 tahoe does that and i can't stand it, but it also happens when your at 30mph and roll off then roll on lightly, you can feel it, im not sure if theyre the same thing

to be certain, put a floor jack under the rear diff and lift the rear end off the groind just so the tires are not touching ground. tranny in neurtal (front wheels chocked of course) and ebrake off. get under there and see what/where u have slop. Spin the drive line, try to manipulate the ujoints up, down, sideways-- you may have a failed ujoint. feel for slop in the trunion. look, listen and feel for anything that doesn't seem right. pull the shaft and have new ujoints pressed in and, if possible, upgrade ur joints while ur at i

good luck
