Delay Turning Over on Startup

Hey Guys and Gals, I need your help. My 2000 Yukon has over 86K miles on it now. Over the past 2 weeks, I've noticed that there is a slight delay in the engine turning over when I turn the key. It happens more on colder startups (after it sits for a couple hours or more), and over the past day it's gotten much more noticeable. Before, yesterday, it was just a slight delay before the engine would fire, but now there's a definite noticeable hitch from the time I turn the key to when it fires. It's almost like it tries to turn over briefly the split second I turn the key, but it fails and does nothing for a second, then it turns over.

Any idea what my problem is? I'm guessing the fuel pump is going since so many people seem to report that problem between 85-110K miles or so. Other thoughts are the battery or starter? Don't think it's bad plugs/wires -- I put in new plugs and wires 13K miles ago last November. Back then, it turned over immediately.

As for hearing a fuel pump whine, I've definitely been hearing a whine on acceleration with the windows open for a while.

Also, my gas mileage has dropped 1.5 mpg in the last year or so (I am making a lot of shorter trips cause I live close to work now), but could that be a symptom of the fuel pump going? I'm going to replace the 2 pre-cat O2 sensors just in case.

Any thoughts? Please help, cause I don't want to get stranded somewhere.

I started a topic Fuel Pressure Regulator which you may want to check out. Easy enough to check and diagnose.

GM is planning a safety recall on fuel pumps for 2000-2001 Chevy Suburban 1500 Series and 2000-2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500 Series vehicles. The attached letter to GM dealers explains the possible complaints and cause.

This recall won’t officially start until November 2005, however, as the letter indicates. GM dealers are instructed to replace fuel pumps exhibiting this failure with existing stock and submit the repair under GM factory warranty.

Therefore, should we get a request for a fuel pump on the above vehicles, if possible, refer the owner to a GM dealer, and remind GM dealers of the letter and intent to be covered under factory warranty. Be aware GM will only cover the FP under the described specific conditions.

The recall number will be 05027.

The dealer letter reference number is 1670143, dated May 18, 2005.

The dealer should submit using the labor op Y0040 until the recall starts; the labor time is found under L1200.

I don't think my problem is the fuel pressure regulator... checked the vaccuum line and it's dry.

I did notice that the green light on my battery is not lit up... do you think I need a new battery? It's been 5 years on this one, so I guess I'll replace it just in case that's the problem. I hope it's the batt. and not the fuel pump.

What kind of battery is the best? I've read Optima red top is preferred by a lot of people on here. Two questions:

1. Which model # do I need for my '00 Yukon 5.3L

2. Is there some height adapter or other piece I need to get in order for it to fit?

Do you all agree that I should not replace it with an OEM Delco? Mine's been great for 5 years.

Thanks!

well, i went ahead and changed the battery and everything is pretty much back to normal... it still doesn't fire right up like it did 5-10K miles ago, but there's not much of a hesitation anymore. guess I have avoided the fuel pump replacement for now.

oh yeah, i put in an optima red top 75/35 OR. It was $110 at AutoZone. My Haynes manual says to replace the battery with one that has the same # of CCA (600), etc. etc., but the one I put in has more CCA... is this something I should worry about?

Also, the new battery is smaller than the Delco, so the foam cover doesn't fit... did you guys that put in new batteries worry about putting the foam back on or did you just drop the battery in there?

Finally, I did have a bit of corrosion coming out of the + terminal... I pulled the battery tray and soaked it and the + terminal in water/baking soda to neutralize all the acid. Only thing I didn't do was re-paint the tray since I don't have my POR-15 paint with me.
