Intake options for the 8.1

I see alot of you have the Volant induction. From my experience with modding my camaro K&N has always been a quality option for a CAI. What advantages does the Volant provide over the K&N and others that convinced you to buy it? From looking at pictures of it, the box around the filter reduces the intake of hot air from the engine compartment. On the other hand the K&N filter is out in the open correct? I assume this is the main reason for choosing Volant over K&N but I could be wrong. Your opinions are appreciated. BTW, this is for a 8.1 .

Thanks,

Hey Work'n, Haulin' here. Yes that's the reason. Air is very elastic, when it's hot the molecules are bouncing around a lot and spread apart. When cool they settle down and gather up. So if you pour cooler air into your engine it will make more power because it uses more air.

The Volant has a 3.5" duct nipple on the bottom, it's open between the fender and bumper. I just hooked up two pieces of 3.5" air duct hose to it and routed it into my bumper box in front of the radiator. I can tell the difference especially at higher speeds. The scanner showed a 13 degree drop in IAT (intake air temp). The air pressure is higher there than in the hot engine compartment also. Volant makes a ram air duct and hose kit for stock bumpers.

I've driven a few 6.0 HD's with "Cold Air Induction" kits in them that use under hood air. In my opinion they work worse than stock. That's not only seat of pants but using a scan tool to monitor things. Stock box with a K&N panel is better. Then Volant and similar.

I agree completely with Haulin 8.1.

That hose hooked on the bottom of the Volant airbox and run to the front bumber really does make a noticable difference.

Thanks guys, I figured that was the reason. On LT1 camaros all the CAIs have the filters in the same spot, down out of the engine compartment in front of the driver's side wheel. So basically every CAI will give you the same gain its just which one cost less and looks better. If I end up putting induction on my 8.1 I'll go with Volant.
