cold start

My son has a 1988 chevy pick-up with a 6.2 naturally aspirated moter it has 90000 miles. the paper work he got with the truck shows that GM replaced the engine under warranty when the truck was 2 years old so the engine has somewhat less milage.

lately it has has been difficult to start when cold, sitting over night or for a few hours. We have replaced the glow plugs fule filter and fule pump. I have not checked the voltage to the glow plugs with a meater but have checked all 8 with an idiot light.

the engine will start and run rough then die and wile take a couple of restarts to run. during the restarts it has a rough idle. There is no excessive smoke from the tale pipe I have also drained the water seperator.

The obivious should I recheck (with a meter) the voltage to the glow plugs. Could the glow plug controler be bad or do you have any other suggestions.

I'm not sure if the 6.2 and the 6.5 which I know better have the same glow plugs but the old 9-G glow plugs would swell up and would be hard to replace. So there are new glow plugs that don't swell but guess what??????? the don't get as hot so the glow time needs to be extended. I put a relay between the controller and it has button I put on the dash so when the glow light goes out I push the button for about 5 seconds or more depending on temp and she starts real good. I got the kit from SS Diesel Also Pennisular Diesel has an adjustable glow plug controller that you can change the glow time with.

Thank you for the suggestion I will check out the "button" option would still like to figure out the problem though I will have to do some more tinkering I guess.

Ok I checked with a meter and had 10 volts at the relay/controler and 10 volts at the glow plugs and 13 volts at the battery replaced the relay/controler without any change in the cold starting.

Any suggestions
