Anyone know the ft/lbs torque for lug nuts?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to have to ask, but I dont have my manual with me.....does anyone know the approx ft/lbs to tighten the wheel nuts? I have a torque wrench and would like to know for future tire rotations ect.

Not sure if it matters or not, but it is for a 05 crew 1/2 ton

thx

It should say in the owner's manual but for the '03 with alloy wheels it's 140ft/lbs.  I think it's the same for the steel wheels too.  I'm sure the '05s are the same.

Ditto on the '04's. 140 ft/lbs. I cannot imagine anything changed on the 05's.

vroten

Whatever the max on my impact wrench/air compressor combo is...That's my wheel torque specs.

Kind of makes you think though...Do the techs at dealerships use torque wrenches to put the wheels on?

Most of our guys here don't use torque wrenches but use "torque sticks" on their impact wrenches, these limit the amount of torque applied to the lug nut while still allowing the use of an impact wrench.

And yes,140 ft.lbs. is the proper torque setting for the lug nuts on our trucks.

I worked as an assistant at a dealer over the summer, one of the guys I worked with used a set of torque sticks, the other, well, when I asked him how tight to go with the impact he told me, 'Just zap it!'

Unfortunately, rotors can be warped by improperly torquing the wheel lugs. When I have Discount Tire rotate and balance mine, I don't even let them use torque sticks. I believe there is no substiture for a 3 stage torque routing. I tighten mine (in a star) to 80ft-lbs, 110ft-lbs and finally 140ft-lbs. A good friend of mine put his on with an impact and within 2 weeks was replacing his relatively new rotors.

I might be going a little overboard but why take the change when rotors warp so easily and can be expensive to replace.

Y'all, I stretched a bunch and finally snapped two of my studs (the night before leaving for my honeymoon, of all times) by torquing to 140lbs. I ain't ever taking them that tight again  I always thought it was a bit much. Now I know it is.

Good luck to y'all that are still using 140lbs, I'm staying around 110~120 from now on.

Oh, btw, I use a $300 Snap-On that gets calibrated once a year, so that it ain't it....

Thats what I use also,Snap-On (They are the ONLY brand of tools I use!) and I've never had a problem with any 5 of my full-size trucks going to 140ft.lbs.

Thats awful strange Eric,I wonder if the metal was bad or something in those two studs.

Man, to say I blew up would be a severe understatement

I have a dented sandblaster and busted knuckle to prove it  (they tell me I have some sort of temper issue, whatever that means  )

I went to the dealer the following morning, swollen hand and all (joy), and guess what- only two studs in ALL of Houston ?? Hard to believe... or maybe.... just maybe.... others are breaking too ???

I think he could sense I wasn't real happy, although I didn't go-off and was pleasant enough. I told him I was supposed to have left for my honeymoon in a couple hours, and, I gotta hand it to them- they did a nice job, replaced 4 studs (dunno where the other two came from and didn't ask) and got me on my way, no charge. We were supposed to leave at noon, didn't leave till 7pm.

I had a few that just didn't seem to want to take 140lbs. I thought maybe the stud wasn't fully seated, so I was going to pull it on flush. So I turned and turned and turned and... snap. Hmmm..... On to the next stud, same deal. They were side by side, the two adjacent to those two only took about 100lbs and kept stretching...

Ehhh... lucky me. But I ain't putting 140 to 'em ever again !!!!

Mine aren't at 140 either, but only cos the mechanic who's torque sticks I was borrowing only had a 120, wheels haven't fallen off yet! =)
