2003 bad pewter paint???

Recommended Posts

My 2003 Chev 2500HD Duramax/Allison apparently has a coat of bad Pewter color paint on the hood.

In a few places, perhaps up to 1" in diameter, the paint initially starts cracking much like a dry pond bed in the summer heat, then the paint flakes off leaving the gray primer underneath.

The truck usually is parked outside in Virginia.

Anyone have this problem? Comments? Causes?

I have had this on a Chev back in the 80's. This can be referred to as crows feet-ing.

Happens for a couple of reasons, mine was a documented problem with the steel being 'too cold' when paint was applied and therefore did not adhere properly. Also any dirt or residue on the metal can cause this.

Mine was off warranty, BUT GM agreed to repaint the car ( first strip old paint down) for a nominal fee.

Hopefully this is only on your hood, if so see about GM taking ownership. If not then get a new hood or have this one stripped and repainted....

I'm having a similar issue on a 2002 Yukon Denali with pewter metallic paint. The paint along the rear hatch is blistering and cracking off, exposing the primed metal. It's happening along the entire bottom of the hatch at the metal seam (you see it when the hatch is open and you look up.) I'm also seeing a small amount of blistering along the bottom of the driver's door at the seam. I plan to take the truck to the dealer to see if they'll cover the repair even though it's out of warranty.
