How far away from civilization are you willing to be stuck w/ a dead battery or alternator?

Seriously, don't shrug at potential power issues. Get it tested and remember: No Power = Truck No Worky.

If it's OE, replace it, and I recomend beefing it up a little if you plan to keep the truck or are running a lot of aux apps. If it's replacement parts under some kind of warranty, duh !

Mean Green and Optima (Red) were my choices.

My $0.02

2001 8.1 litre in 2500HD. My research indicates the 8.1 motor will lose the CKP between 60 and 70K miles... if ur close, get it fixed now, not later, after ur stranded along the roadway.

the original CKP is outdated and the new replacement AC delco has been superceded w/ new part numbers at least twice since 2001.

word to the wise-- fix it now, even tho it may run fine.

good luck

Did you do the work yourself?

It's the same w/ the cam sensor. The part has been updated that is.

i do nearly all work on my vehicles, including building my RARECJ8 rockcrawler, but for this job, i enlisted my mechanic and his shop. They wrestled w/ it for two hours getting it out in one piece-- and that's the challenge-- the CKP has a nasty tendency to break apart, dropping the front half of the sensor inside the motor block...ugly consecquence for sure!

Exactly why I asked.

Haven't changed mine yet.

After looking at the Helms Manual and seeing what a potential SNAFU it could turn into, I've decided to leave this one up to someone else.

Who am I kidding, I'll probably have one too many out in the shop one night, roll out the Cruiser, roll in the 2500 and be on here the next day asking if anyone knows how to get half of a CKP out of an 8.1.

Shoot me some updated pics on that CJ. RU on Pirate4x4's forums?

Performance Update:

After swaping in the new CKP, the motor idles soother and has noticably more 'pep' off the line and just driving around. The once sluggish tachometer now really moves well tracking the RPMs--

so its a win/win deal; glad i did it. the alternative was to drive a rig that can and would die with no notice, at anytime-- like on the freeway or in traffic. I was freaked to drive it and took the heep to work in the cold morning air untuil i could get it fixed-- took about 1/2 day in shop.
