Tranny problems

Recommended Posts

My father is having a problem with his automatic transmission in his 1998 GMC Sierra 4X4. I've been a Jeep guy for years  and have little to no experience with GMs. Dad bought the truck used but I was with him when he checked it out and I test drove it with him and everything seemed to be solid. He has had it less than a year and the transmission started making all kinds of noises. He has done nothing but drive it 3 miles a day to work and back ever sense he bought it. First i checked out the transfer case to see if that was the problem. Fluid was good and everything seemed ok. So I went on to the transmission. When I drained the fluid from the tranny to change it there were a lot of little clutch chunks in it :chevrolet: . So I threw a new filter in it and some new fluid and Lucas and started doing some research. I was told that the tranny is a 4L60E. So I called the guy who rebuilds our transmissions and he told me it would be about $1300.00 to rebuild it. I have a friend with some old GM Turbo 400s and a 700R4 that is in good shape. Will either of these bolt up and work ok, am I doomed to hocking out the cash to get the 4L60E rebuilt, or is everything not as bad as I'm making it out to be. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

in all truth the 700r4 is the 4l60e. gm just changed the name of it so it seemed like they came up with a new trans, but you will need to compair both of them there is some differance on older 700r4. look on the out side to make sure they look the exact same

Not true the 700R4 is mechanical and the 4L60E is electrically controlled. You cannot use a 700R4 where a 4L60E was used because the PCM controls the transmission and will set codes.
