What rear end gear do I have

How can I find out what rear end gear my truck is running? Do I need to get with a dealer and have them look up the original paperwork on my truck. I have miss placed the window sticker. Is there a sticker on the truck somewhere that will tell me what the gearing is.

Look on the SPID label (option codes) in your glove box. The codes that start with "G" will tell you. G80 is limited slip and ratio could be GU6, etc. If you get those codes, we can tell ya the axle you have.

All Quadrasteers have G86 posi units. Normal rearends may have G80 posi units.

QS rears all came with either 3.73 or 4.10 gears. 3.73s will be GT4, 4.10s are GT5.

Like Tech said, look on the glovebox door.

Hey Tech, off-hand, do you exactly what posi unit the QS have ??

I was told they have Detroit TrueTracs in them by a pretty good source, but we've been having a lot of rearend discussions lately, and a lot of guys have added posi additive to theirs, there's talk of them moaning and chattering, all things that helical posis DON'T do or need

I'm not sure that they don't have truetracs, but I'm really beginning to wonder

When you say "posi" are you referring to full time traction with both wheels. I really hate to be so dumb at times when it comes to all this technology stuff. Wanting to make sure I have all my facts and figures right as I am considering getting a tune done on the truck.

Actually, I don't. I've seen exactly ONE quadrasteer truck in here since they came out with it and it wasn't for a quadrasteer or axle concern. I looked in our service information, but it doesn't go into that detail.

Bill, actually when I say posi, it's really more of a limited slip than a locker. Is that more clear ?? Posi, if I'm not mistaken, is just a *brand* name for limited slip, like xerox or q-tip. You know the difference between a locker and a l/s ?? Regardless, it shouldn't matter for a tune.

Tech, I was at the dealer for something a couple weeks ago and asked the parts guy to look up the QS unit for parts and see what it had listed for the posi unit. Funny- it showed a regular rearend with the Q/S parts just kinda floating in space, and with an open diff !!!

Gotta love that GM attention to detail

I do believe I understand a slip differential. That is where the power is switched between tires if one starts to spin. Have heard the term locker but have no clue as to what it is.

A locker is like a spool in a straight line- both wheels are LOCKED solid together with NO slip. When you turn, one will disengage to turn at a different rate. Lockers are known to have *bad* street manners, in that they may be jerky, loud, noticeable or all of the above. There are soft-lockers available these days, but even those are noticeable to those that have never driven a real locker.

A spool does away with the diff all together and locks both axles all the time. Most folks agree they are not for street use, although many people do use them on the street.

I opened it a year ago to see if everything was ok, and to change its oil. There is a kind of ratchet, and we figured it would engage in reverse.

Sounds like a locker right? (Posi locker.. locker.. ) And it sure doesnt work

Not sure how it works on older models since my LSD (Got the G80 as well, with 3.73 gears on a '05 Colorado Z71 2wd) is electronically controlled, but whenever I punch the throttle from a standstill or low speed, the RPMs drop and the wheels lock up. It's a mixed blessing as its helped me get out of some ditches before, and it has the unfortunate habit of engaging on dry pavement.

Got an auto trans and the I-5 engine (Vortec 3500, 5 cylinder 3.5L)
