Warranty And Do-It-Yourself Oil Change

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how GM handles warranty on engines or suspension parts if you do your own maintenance. I am not currently having any issues my vehicles, but after previous experience with dry grease zerts, or better yet grease squirted in direction of difficult to reach zerts, prefer to do most of my own maintenance. I am guessing that receipts would be required, but what else?

Thanks

If you go by the oil life monitor on oil changes and grease according to the service plan thats in the owners manual and also keep your log in manual up that should be fine. If they for any reason have to do warrenty and take engine apart they can tell if oil was changed or not.

Easiest way I have found on both of my new GM vehicles is use the myGMlink and keep track of your mileage and maintenance on line.

Far as greasing your zerks, becareful not to over grease, and do not grease a zerk that is less that 10-degrees F or you will damage them. i.e. ball joint boots.

You can do you own think on maintenance, but keep a record of your stuff either on the gm link or in a calander based log book.

I have both as I enter various fluid level top offs or other misc stuff so that that I can show when I did things , what the mileage was and if they want to dispute, go for it. I have better records than they do.....

I did that with a vehicle I had 170,000 miles on and maintained a log on everything, with reciepts if there was major repair...

Does the dealer really care? I have never had a dealer ask for a maintenance log. In fact, I got a letter from my dealership telling me it's about time for the 30,000 mile maintenance and they had scheduled me an appointment. I called and canceled the appointment and told them I do my own maintenance. They said, "Oh, the computer just sends those out, you can ignore it if you do the work yourself." They don't really care.

Has anyone had run into problems getting GM to honor a warranty based on maintenance history? My luck has been good with the warranty in the past, I am curious more than anything.
