I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 4X4 and I think I am having issues with the front differential. I am hearing a clicking/tapping noise in the front end mostly when I back up or at slow speeds. I have had it at my local mechanic and he checked out the brakes shocks wheel bearings, he also took out the front shaft and checked out the U joints and he claimed everything looked fine. This weekend I put it in 4 wheel high to see if that was okay and well it wasnt. It made a very weird whinding/ grinding noise and hasn't drove (in 2 wheel drive) right since. Had a friend of mine that is a weekend mechanic look at it and both mechanics think it has something do with the front diff. It is now at a specialty mechanic and I am waiting to hear the bad news. Any ideas???

That grinding noise is normal if you were driving it on pavement with high traction and trying to turn. You shouldn't get that noise if you're in the dirt / off road with low traction.

Sorry, don't know about that other noise. I'm wondering if you don't hear that noise at high speed because you're going to fast to hear it?

I have wondered the same thing about the not hearing cause of the higher speeds. And I did drive it on dry pavement but after going back into 2 wheel drive it is acting very strange.

Kind of feels as if I am pushing something, kind of liked bogged down.

It is currently at a specialty shop for 4X4 and performance type stuff, and of course it isn't acting up for the tech. So I had to go over there and drive it with him and if kind of made the noise again and he mentioned that it might be the CV joints. It just sucks cause i guarantee when I take it home it will make the noise all of the time.

Okay so the latest news is that the mechanic took apart the front diff and he said everyting looked fine. So now I am back to square one. Back to a previous question just so I get this straight. Is the front drive shaft always supposed to be spinning, is that normal??? If so I assume that it is spinning just not engaged. Do I assume correct?
