Tranny whine - 97 W/T

Hello all. We have a 97 W/T with the 4.3 and 5 speed. The truck has about 170k on it and a few months back a whine started in the tranny. I changed the fluid which made no difference (didn't expect it to). I'm not sure if the noise is in the tranny or the clutch. When you disengage the clutch the whining stops. Whining continues whenever the clutch is engages whether in neutral or in gear.

Any ideas before I tear into this thing?

Thanks for all your help!

Does it make the noise in all gears? My tranny in my 89 made noise in all gears but 4th, it ended up being the input bearing. Not the one in the end of the crank but the one in the end of the trans case. The trans shop told me it was a cheap tranny and the dealership told me that the 4.3 is harder on the manual transmission due to vibration. It took about 2 weeks for the dealership to find a rebuilt one. The rebuilt one was replaced after 2,000 miles with the same problem. On my 05, all these noises are considered normal.

On the first transmission, the tranny shop replaced half of the fluid with 80-90 lube to quiet is down. It worked fine until I could afford to replaced it 4 months later.
