GM Radio with CD Player

GM Tech or anyone who can answer this - Please

This is my first post to this forum. I have an '06 GMC Sierra Regular Cab, Long Bed, Work Truck. I've had it a Week and 2 days now. Nice truck, V6 with Manual 5 speed.

Anyway, these come with an AM/FM Stereo with no CD. I noticed that many GM vehicles use what looks like the same radio. I see Many radios with a CD on EBay that I know would fit the opening on my truck. I believe I know how to get the old radio out, it look's fairly easy. I also believe that any replacement radio has to go to the dealer, once installed for a VIN match. I believe this match is done with a computer.

My question, can any radio that fits the my truck be programmed to work? A couple of examples appear below:

If I decide to change my unit what do I need to know? Will anything that fits work?

Radio swaps can be done. I can't give you specifics of what works and what doesn't, but if your truck was available with a radio you want to install, it shouldn't be a problem. A Bose system has an amplifier so you can't just stick a Bose head in and expect it to work correctly.

Yes, it would have to go to the dealer to be programmed for the vehicle.

I had a chance to go look at the two radios on eBay that you listed. I wouldn't get either of those. Try to find one that is specifically for a 2005-2006 full size truck.

i have a similar question to this one......i have a 2005 silverado 1500 crew w/6 CD changer BOSE ....i noticed the avalanche has the option for a DVD based NAV/GPS could i order that part from GM and have GM dealership install that in my truck? would it work?

Well, I finally found one today, that fits the bill, and I bought it. Now the "UB0" code has me a little worried. The code in my Work Truck is "UM7". The things you learn when you do research.

However, this radio was built in June of '05 and ,Truck in August of '05. My gut tells me it should reprogram fine, but there's this little nagging feeling

Well, I put it in last Thursday Nite, and had the dealer program it Friday morning. It did just fine. This unit sounds better than the AM/FM only radio. Does it have more power?

I ordered a set of Pioneer speakers this morning from Crutchfield. Hope I did the right thing.

Can a radio (specifically the unit with MP3) from a Colorado be used in a full size truck. I know they will physically fit but can it be made to work properly? I want MP3 function but also like to keep my vehicles with factory radios, etc (my personal preference ).

I wish the GM Tech was back here to help us, but from the answers he gave above, I would say no. I would have done the same thing if I thought it would have worked. But, he specifically said it had to have been an option on the model truck it's being installed in, and of course, the Colorado Radio wasn't. He also cautioned me against putting a radio from an '03 or an '04 in my '06, even though they had the same option code "UB0". In a case like this, I would be cautious.

I have a similar issue,

I have a 2005 Silverado 1500WT that came new with a UM7 system. I recently purchased a UB0 out of a 2004 Canyon on EBAY. I installed the radio in my truck and it works except that it don't seem to sound very good. The UM7 sounded better. Does any one know if this may be a programming issue?
