Ok so im looking to buy a new cam and i know absolutley nothing about cams. i need something that will give me some lope and some more power. i want something that i know wont be abnoxious but something that ill be able to tell a difference when i step on it. So i was wondering what cam u guys would suggest that i look at and what u gues noticed power difference wise. I will most likely be getting my heads ported and a new intake manifold. so let me know.

Thanks for bearing with a newb. :chevrolet:

my favorite thing to hear people say when they hear a big lope in a motor is

"hey that thing's got a cam in it" and I think..ok that is opposed to NOT having a cam.:smash::smash::smash:

Now to your question..

this is something to research because when you begin messing around from the stock cam you can change alot of things, some you may like and some you may not like.

I admit to screwing up a Jeep motor once by putting a different cam in that wasn't suitable for low crawl pulling up hills because I did not think about what the cam did to the power band on the motor.

With todays electronics a cam swap can change a ton of things. I would say ask the cam manufatures like Crane, CompCams, Crower. Tell them what you plan on doing with your vehicle and any other changes such as intake and heads. They more than likely already have customers out there that are running that set up and can give you a good cam set to go with. I did that with my 396 in my Impala and they all recommened the same cam. It runs exactly how I want it to.

Keep us posted.

Always good advice. I've got the "upgrade" bug myself (my 400hp SSR makes the truck feel quite lacking anymore), so the first thing I did was go out and purchase (well, I sat on my ass and clicked the mouse a few times) two books from Amazon - "Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s" by Will Handzel and "Chevy LS1/LS6 Performance" by Chris Endres. Both can be found on Amazon or Ebay reasonably cheap. These books contain a lot of useful information that may help in your decision.

For me, (see my signature), I decided on a route of less destruction. Rather than a cam, simply upgrading to a higher ratio set of rockers can accomplish nearly the same results (more lift, longer duration), and it's far less work to replace the rockers than it is the cam. Add to that a good set of headers, exhaust, and intake can achieve some real tangible power gains at minimal cost. To top that off, I plan to add a Westers tune to make the most of it.

a good cam depends on your application. each cam is designed to run optimal at a fixed RPM, using cams that achive higher horse can end up costing you low end power, and if you use one thats too agressive your lowend can be very loopey.

cams designed to give you more toque at lower rpms limit your ability to have a good amount of power in the higher ranges. and therefore give you good off the line power, but then can destroy you once you're moving.

hoenstly it sounds like you need to do more reasearch than just asking what cams to run. it all depends on application...
