transfer case

Seems when I push the 4hi or 4lo button, the lights flash constantly. This can't be good, right? '99 K2500 Burb. Dealer diagnosed, but no error code came up. What's this about? Defiinitely going into 4wd in all positions, no problem there.Charging up snowpacked dugways like a mountain goat. Dealer says TC can go at any time..suggests I drive until it lets go rather than spend $1K plus to tear apart and find an answer. Any experience out there?

Do you get a "Service 4WD" indicator?  We've had some switch problems in those, but that's a guess.

No "service" indicator at all. It's minus 3 degrees outside and I've been climbing a good part of the day...light just keeps flashing and the 4WD is working just fine. I live at the top of the second of two short, steep unpaved dugways, snow and ice covered. As I say, the 4WD works for now, but if it goes out........still looking for ideas. Not sure why no error codes come up....there must be a way to diagnose problem in this day and age without tearing up transfer case. At one point, the light stayed steady when I released the emergency brake, then began flashing again when I hit the foot brake. Go figure.

I'd really need to look at it with a scanner to see what's going on, if I could even tell anything with that. My really wild guess would be an encoder motor sensor. Even though the transfer case IS in the proper position, the sensor may be reporting back invalid information which could cause the switch to keep blinking as if it though the shift was still occuring.

Well, the dealer changed out a couple of the obvious things, but fell short of getting into the expensive teardown. Thanks for your input...reckon I'll just live with it until something happens.
